“It’s like you don’t know me at all.”

“They have you brainwashed into thinking this is who you are, but it isn’t.”

“My family hasn’t brainwashed me.”

“Family? You call these guys who trained you to kill, family?”

“My brothers did exactly what I wanted them to do.”

“A real family wouldn’t do that.”

“Just because our family dynamic doesn’t match yours doesn’t mean it isn’t right.” I didn’t know why I bothered to argue, but I needed to say it.

“You’re right, my family is nothing like yours.”

I played around with the knife in my hand. “That’s not entirely true now is it, Diederik?”

His eyes widened. “You know.”

“Of course we fucking know,” I shot back. “Just how long did you think it would take us to figure out? If you would have left things alone, you wouldn’t be where you are right now.”

“I couldn’t let it go,” he spat. “Maybe I would have forgiven you in time, but when you started messing with the cop, I had to do something about it.”

“It was you.”

“What can I say? If I couldn’t have you, then no one could.”

“Sucks that you failed then,” I told him, to which he shrugged his shoulders. “So riddle me this. Why did you have me kidnapped?”

“You were kidnapped?” he feigned surprise.

“Don’t even bother acting surprised. We know it was you.”

“See the response to your first question. If I couldn’t have you, then I might as well make some money off you.”

“I hope it was worth it.”

“What were you doing at Loraine’s home?”

“After you killed my father—”

“Who the fuck is your father?” I interrupted.

“Jerry.”

Holy fuck.

“Jerry was your father?” Hunter asked.

“I’m not talking to you,” Dirk seethed.

“How did you know that I killed Jerry?”

“I was watching you that night, and followed you to where you took his body. I wanted to protect you from getting arrested.”

“So you followed me and took his body, freezing it for just the right moment?”

“Why couldn’t you just go along with it?” he asked, as if he hadn’t even heard my question at all.
