Go along with it? Did he want me to just lay back and let him have me? Like some whore who never got paid.

I don’t think so.

“What was the plan? Were you gonna try and make me fall in love with you? Then what? Dump me and break my heart?”

“I don’t know why I thought that would work.” He shook his head in disgust, then his eyes narrowed. “You’re such a cold-hearted bitch. You probably wouldn’t shed a tear for your own brother if he died. Hell, you probably smiled when you found your own mom dead on the floor.”

I couldn’t tell you what happened next because I blacked the fuck out.

“Come back to me Harleigh,”a voice coaxed me out of the darkness.

The feeling was like a heavy weight on my chest that I couldn't shake, no matter how hard I tried. The familiar scent of Hunter invaded my nose, warring with the metallic of the blood. When I opened my eyes, the first thing I noticed was we were in another room. For some reason my mouth couldn’t form the words to ask him what had happened, so I just remained quiet.

“Remember when we were in Tijuana last year and the hotel got raided by the Cartel?” Hunter asked.

“Yeah,” I responded.

“We had to hide out for days in that rat infested underground escape tunnel.” I nodded against his chest. “There were bullets being fired in the building above us and fucking rats crawling all around our feet. They filled the walls with skeletal remains stacked from the ground to the dirt ceiling. I was freaking the fuck out. Do you remember what you told me?”

“I told you it could be worse. That we could have been stuck in the sewer instead of the catacombs.”

“You also said that I should stop being a prissy bitch.” He laughed, the rumble in his chest vibrated through my body.

“Exactly, but that’s not what I'm gonna say to you.”

“You're not?” I said.

“No, but not ‘cause I'd love for nothing other than there to be a quick fix to what you're going through.”

“Then why won't you?” I asked, not wanting to leave his arms.

“There's a fundamental difference between that Mexican hotel and what you went through.”

“What's that?” I asked as if he held all of life's answers.

“We were in it together. I had your back then, like I do now, but you were alone out there.” he took a deep breath. “They took you from right under our noses.”

Extracting myself from his arms, I said, “I’m back now and that’s because of you guys and I’m okay.”

“You’re not okay.”

“Fine,” I sighed. “I’ve got some things to work through, but at least I’m alive.”

“The only reason we got you back relatively unscathed is because one of the bigger players has plans for our organization.”

I asked. “Do we even know what he wants?”

“His sister is missing. Her uncle sold her from right under his nose.”

“Sounds familiar.”

“We think Alexei has her,” he confessed.

“How do you figure?”

“Dimitri called him when we couldn't find you, and although we don’t know exactly what was said, we’re pretty sure Alexei’s involved.” Hunter groaned. “I don't know what your boy toy has on the leader of the Bratva, but it must be big because he dropped everything to help. No questions asked.”
