“I think I know what it is,” I said.

“What?”

“I got confirmation that he's Alexei and Ana's younger brother,” I replied.

“Really?”

“Yup. All this time I knew it was either that or a very close relative. They have the same eyes. Even if Alexei's look a bit more violent, it was hard to miss.”

“I’ll have to take your word for it, ‘cause I didn’t really look into his eyes.”

“That’s ‘cause you’re a man. Don't say anything until we know for sure ‘cause I shouldn’t have overheard what I did, and I don’t want any problems with Alexei.”

“It'll be our secret,” Hunter assured me.

“At least until Erik thinks it’s safe enough for the word to get out. Dimitri thinks that the other reason that he’s here is to watch over Ana just in case what’s happening with the Bratva spills into our territory.”

“Does Erik know that you know?”

I shook my head, but I wasn’t sure. “Even if he did, I doubt Dimitri said anything.”

Before I had overheard Erik and Ana arguing, I knew there had to be something more to Dimitri coming here. The day he was brought here, the conversation I had overheard between my brother and Alexei hadn’t explained everything. It was also completely out of character for Erik to just take a prospect without vetting them first himself.

“Did you suspect something?” I asked. When he shook his head, I changed tactics. “Why else would Alexei be so adamant that Dimitri join us?”

“Something tells me that’s the only reason Erik didn't argue his placement with the Reapers. When have you known him to agree to something like this so quick?”

“I haven't.”

“Exactly,” he agreed. “Are you ready to go?”

“I can’t believe you moved me out here without me realizing.”

“After you went to town on him, you went into this pliable state. It was the weirdest fucking shit imaginable. We were able to get the knife away from you and then I moved you to where the car was.”

“What are the other guys doing?”

“Cleaning up,” he responded. “Don’t worry about that now. What we need to worry about is how we’re going to work through this.”

“You’re saying I should talk to someone about this?”

He chuckled. “Not talking isn’t helping.”

“Obviously.”

“None of us are going to force you to go and talk to someone, but let me ask you something.”

“Okay.”

“What if you’re out on a job alone and that happens again? Worst, what if someone you care about says the wrong thing and sends you into it?”

“I never thought about that.”

“To be honest, I doubt you’d intentionally hurt anyone you cared about, but they might get caught in the crossfire.”

“And I’d never forgive myself if that happened.”

“Exactly.”
