“You’d be correct to assume that” I sighed loudly. “I need your help again.”

“You mean, you want me to pretend to be your girlfriend again?” she asked.

“That’s one way to put it,” I replied. “Listen, it’s only going to be for a few days.”

She went to take a seat on the chair in front of my desk. “I don’t understand. I thought it was going to be a one-time thing. Besides, we just spent an entire weekend convincing your mother about our fake relationship.”

“That’s the thing,” I said. “I think we did too good of a job, because she wants to see you again and is coming to visit tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” her eyes widened. “But we’re in the middle of kicking off the new project.”

“I guess you’re going to have to juggle both worlds.”

“Dylan…” she sighed softly. “I don’t know if this a good idea.”

“Listen, I know it’s awkward for you,” I moved in closer to her. “But if I can convince my mother that I’m in a serious relationship, she will finally leave me alone.”

At this point, I was ready to plead if I had to. The weekend had gone too well for me to just disappoint and hurt my mom now.

“Has anyone ever told you that you have the craziest ideas?” she sighed. “And not just ideas, you actually end up executing them.”

“So you’ll do it?” I asked. “I’ll give you an extra week of paid vacation this year if you agree.”

“Make it two and you have yourself a deal,” she shot back quickly.

“Thank you,” relief washed over me. “At this point, I might as well make you the Employee of the Month.”

“More like the Best Girlfriend You’ve Never Had,” she teased.

I bit back a smile. She was too adorable. “How soon can you move into my place?”

“Move in?” she blinked at me. “You’re kidding, right? I thought I was just going to have to go to lunches, and pedicures, and...”

I shook my head. “If I have any real shot of convincing her that this is a serious relationship, we need to live together. I have more than enough space for you in my apartment.”

“I do remember,” she muttered under her breath. “Fine, I’ll do it. But just know, this is the last time that I’m playing along and be your pretend girlfriend. As fun as it is, I really can’t keep getting distracted from work like this.”

“I promise. This is the last time I’ll ask,” I assured her.

She stared at me without saying a word. Her expression went from curiosity to confusion and then finally acceptance.

“I’ll come over with my stuff by six,” she finally said and then walked out of my office.

Chapter 14

Kathy

“Fuck,” I cursed under my breath as I rolled my luggage to the elevator in my building. There was a car waiting for me outside and I was already late.

I couldn’t believe it. I had agreed to this nonsense once again. After that crazy weekend, I swore I wouldn’t blur any boundaries with Dylan anymore but here I was, moving into his house with a fully packed baggage. It felt strange but a small part of me was excited too. When Dylan was pretending, he turned into a fun person to hang out with. It was a welcome change from his grumpy office personality.

The driver helped me put all my belongings into the trunk of the black sedan. When I finally arrived at his building, I didn’t need any instructions on how to go up to his floor. After all, I had been here before. As I walked into his apartment complex, I was reminded of the ‘Walk of Shame’ from that morning after we first hooked up. At the time, I was convinced that I would never see this hot man again but now I was back to his place.

Life was weird.

The elevator door dinged, announcing my arrival at his penthouse. I walked in and immediately noticed the big window in the middle of the living room. Looking at it, I was suddenly flooded with memories of being bent over against the very sill the last time I was here. My muscles tightened up thinking about it.

“Do you want a tour?” Dylan asked, startling me. I hadn’t noticed him come up behind me.
