I shook my head. “I was just looking at the view.”

“Well, when you’re done, let me know. I’ll show you where the spare bedroom is and where you need to keep your things,” he remarked casually.

“Are you seriously going to do this?” I raised an eyebrow at him. His nonchalance was beginning to bother me.

“Do what?” he asked as if he had no idea what I was talking about.

“Dylan,” I warned in a low voice, before finally addressing the elephant in the room. “Are you seriously going to pretend like I haven’t been here before?”

Dylan looked surprised. He probably wasn’t expecting me to bring up that night he took me home from the bar.

“You never really left a note,” he said finally. “I didn’t think you’d even remember.”

I could see how Dylan had made it as a CEO. He had a knack for always making himself sound innocent.

“Well, I do remember,” I replied, glancing at the window again. Dylan looked at it too, and I just knew that both of us were thinking of the same thing.

“It’s something we can put behind us,” he suggested. “I don’t think you had any idea that I was going to be your boss when you decided to come home with me that night.”

He talked about everything so casually. It made me feel stupid for being confused about my feelings towards him earlier.

“Yeah, you’re right,” I replied. “Would you have still done it if you knew I was going to work for you?”

“Kathy…” he trailed off.

“You can tell me,” I pressed. “I mean, you’re not my boss right now. You’re my pretend boyfriend.”

He chuckled at my insistence and then looked directly at me, his eyes darkening for a moment.

“I don’t know,” he replied earnestly. “It’s hard to trust yourself around a pretty girl.”

I felt butterflies erupt in my stomach and a blush covered my cheeks. He was so smooth but he also sounded genuine.

“Do you say that to all the employees you sleep with?” I retorted.

He shook his head. “I’ve never had that kind of experience before. You’re the only one.”

I hadn’t realized how close he had gotten to me during our conversation. When he looked at me like that, with his eyelids hooded and his voice turned low, all I wanted to do was to kiss him. And maybe, just maybe, that’s exactly what he wanted to do as well. His hand slowly moved over to the side of my waist, and in a manner that was almost painfully slow, he began to pull me toward him.

I tilted my face to him. I wanted this just as much as he did. But before he could close the distance between our lips, my ringtone began to blare, and the moment was ruined.

“Sorry,” I said, flustered, as I took my phone out of my small shoulder bag. “I have to take this.”

“Hey girl, are you busy right now?” It was Sarah.

“No, it’s alright,” I said. Even though we hadn’t even kissed, my breath was already quick and shallow. “Do you need something?”

“I'm actually calling to ask you for a bit of a favor,” she said.

“What is it?”

“This super cute guy asked me out on a date tonight. And well, I had been looking forward to it all week but then, my nanny called in this evening and said she is sick and can’t look after my son tonight. I don’t know what to do and it is too short notice to get a replacement…”

“Oh,” I said, looking over at Dylan. “You need someone to look after your son for the evening.”

“Yeah. I know it’s a lot to ask, but do you think you’d be able to do it?” she pleaded.

I bit down on my lip. The timing could not have been worse. “I’m a little bit occupied today.”
