Sup gorgeous?

I stared at the phone in my hands for a few moments. Ever since I had agreed to go out on a date with Kevin, he had been reaching out to me more than ever. He’d try to be flirtatious in his messages and I’d awkwardly respond. My phone dinged again. It was another text from Kevin.

So bummed that our date couldn't happen. But let's not be sad.

Wanna hang out at the bar?

No matter how hard I’d tried I just could not get myself be more interested in spending time with him. For some reason, it just reminded me of high school and Kevin certainly did not talk or act like a mature man I’d want.

Perhaps I was judging him too harshly. But compared to Dylan, he just seemed too immature. Not just in the way that he talked, but also in the way he carried himself. It was annoying to say the least, but I knew that I couldn't keep being this nitpicky if I had any shot of getting over Dylan as quickly as possible.

Sure, meet you there.

I hit a short reply and let out a sigh. I decided to put on a full face of makeup. Sitting in front of the vanity mirror, I lined my eyes precisely and drew a cat-eye and spent extra time curling my lashes to emphasize how naturally long they were.I had purchased a new dress to wear for the date night with Kevin which I had brought with me just in case. It was a little shorter than what I was used to wearing but I felt that it looked great on me. The black mini dress had a V-neckline revealing just enough cleavage. It was the perfect dress for a date night and even though my date was technically canceled, I figured I shouldn't let it go to waste. I decided to wear it tonight at the bar instead.

As soon as I walked into the hotel bar, I felt some prying eyes of men checking me out from top to bottom. I usually wasn't used to showing this much skin but I had to admit—it felt good receiving that much attention as I walked by. I looked around for Kevin, but he was nowhere to be seen. My phone dinged yet again and I realized Kevin had sent a message.

I ran into Dylan at the bar and he gave me work to do.

I'm working on my laptop in my room.

What a total jerk.

I shook my head, putting my phone away in my purse. With Kevin now unavailable, I had no reason to remain at the bar. But I had put in so much effort to get ready that I didn't feel like going back to the room and changing into my pajamas straight away. I at least deserved one drink before calling the night.

"I see you're all dressed up."

I was startled by a deep voice that sounded all too familiar. I looked up to find Dylan sitting there at the bar.

As soon as he saw me, I could see his eyes trail down the exposed skin of my legs. Even under the dim bar lights, I could see his pupils darken with desire.

"Aren't you going to sit down?" he asked after I just stood there in stunned silence.

My heart started pounding uncontrollably. His gaze froze me but I did not want him to notice.

"Depends," I replied. "Are you saying that to me as my boss?"

He let out a low, throaty chuckle. "Yes, Kathy. As your boss, I’m asking you to sit next to me."

I nodded, taking a seat next to him. He was already one drink down, as I noticed an empty glass laid out in front of him.

"Tell me, Kathy," he said, drawing little circles on the side of his glass with his thumb. "Were you expecting to see someone here? Is that why you got so dressed up?"

His tone was almost accusatory, and I thought I saw a flash of jealousy in his eyes as he said those words to me.

Awkwardly, I cleared my throat and shook my head."No, not particularly," I croaked.

"Good," he said, with a satisfied smile. "I don't want you to get distracted when you are on a business trip."

Sitting with him at a bar like this reminded me of the night we first met. I found myself wondering how different things would have been if we didn't cross paths that night.

"Are you going to be a distraction?" I couldn't help but be playful in my tone.

Something about his presence made me feel so at ease that I felt I could talk to him about anything. The flirting came naturally.

"Not if I can help it," he laughed. "You know, one reason why I asked all of you to participate on this overnight retreat was so you could get to know each other better. I know we have had some tensions in the team recently, but I am sure we can iron them out, if we try."

Was Dylan extending an olive branch to me? I nodded, accepting his offer.
