“You think so?” I bit down on my lip. “You also said that he never bothers to show up to these things. And yet, here he is.”

“Yeah. He surprised all of us,” Caitlyn shrugged. “Did he ask to be paired up with you?”

Caitlyn was eyeing me suspiciously now. I quickly chugged down the glass of water in my hands.

“Not really, it was random,” I lied. “Why would he want to be pair up with me?”

The last thing I wanted was office gossip going around about us.

“I don’t know,” Caitlyn narrowed her eyes at me. “It’s just really weird that he showed up in the first place.”

“Hey, wasn’t this retreat his idea anyway?” I said. “He’s really not as bad as you say he is.”

“Did he pay you to say that?” Caitlyn quipped. “Are you sleeping with him in secret?”

I nearly spat out the water I was drinking.

“Caitlyn don’t be ridiculous,” I warned. “Someone might hear you.”

“I’m sorry, I’m just confused about how you seem to have such a good opinion of him. The last employee in your position would spend hours bitching about him to everyone,” Caitlyn said.

“Well, maybe that’s why she ended up losing her job in the first place,” I said sternly. “He’s the boss and I’m sure he knows a lot more about running a successful company than any of us combined.”

“Wow, no need to get defensive there,” Caitlyn retreated. “I was just saying.”

“I know. But I just don’t think Dylan deserves the bad reputation he has,” I stood my ground firmly.

“It’s not unfair of him to ask us to do our jobs properly,” I carried on. “I think the least we can do is not talk behind his back.”

Caitlyn just stared at me, dumbfounded.

“I didn’t know you liked him so much,” she said, still looking confused.

“You must be in love with him or something.”

Her words hit me like a train. Was I in love with him?

“Anyway, I didn’t mean to offend you,” her tone softened. “You know I was just joking around.”

I nodded, appreciative of the fact that she had admitted she had gone overboard. Her words still lingered in my mind though.

“It’s alright. Maybe I got a little defensive too,” I said. “Can I ask you a question though?”

“Shoot,” Caitlyn replied as she opened a pack of potato chips and stacked a few of them in her mouth.

“How do you…” I considered my words carefully, wondering what the best way to phrase them was. “How can you tell when you’re in love?”

“Depends, really. Why, you have someone in mind?” she blurted out with her mouth still full of chips.

“What?”

“Sorry,” she chewed quickly and gulped down the remainder of her food. “I said, are you in love with someone or are you just asking?”

“Oh, I was asking because you brought up the topic,” I said, laughing nervously.

“Right,” she didn’t sound like she believed me but fortunately, she didn’t intrude further. “Well, honestly it depends. I think the biggest indicator is that you think of them all the time.”

“I think of how I’m going to pay my rent or next month’s bills all the time,” I countered. “That’s hardly an indication that I’m in love with them.”
