“You also feel jealous when you see them with another woman,” Caitlyn replied.

“Jealousy is a normal human feeling,” I shrugged. Though I remembered how awful I had felt when Carla had walked into Dylan’s office.

Caitlyn chuckled at my response. “Okay, then how about this. You catch yourself thinking about what it would be like to spend the rest of your life with them. That’s usually a clear indication.”

I opened my mouth to come up with a response but then shut it back up again.

Until then, I had not given any thought about our future together. I hardly had him in the present moment as is. But suddenly, an image of me in a wedding dress walking down the aisle with Dylan waiting to hold my hand popped up in my head.

And as much as I wanted to deny it, I liked the image of it.

“Looks like you’re in love with someone for sure,” Caitlyn remarked, observing me from a distance. “But you’re in denial about it.”

“How would you know that?”

I knew that I had feelings for Dylan for sure. I wondered if it was obvious for others to notice that I had a crush on someone.

“Oh, Kathy,” Caitlyn laughed. “You wouldn’t have been asking me a question like this if you weren’t.”

“Right,” I mumbled. Just then, I spotted Dylan walking into the bar. He was by himself, ordering a drink at the bar now that the scheduled team building activities were done. “Caitlyn, can you excuse me for a moment?”

I swiftly made my way over to him, grinning ear to ear.

“What’s up, teammate,” I greeted him playfully.

He didn’t return the smile. Instead, he just nodded once to acknowledge my presence and then went back to getting himself a drink. It was typical Dylan. His behavior was textbook. One moment he would be so frank and warm towards me. And the next, he went back to being stoic and professional.

I have had enough of it.

“You can’t keep doing this, you know,” I said, getting myself a drink as well. When he tried to turn away from me, I simply followed him for a few steps until Dylan stopped.

“We’re in a company event, Kathy,” he finally replied, realizing that he wasn’t going to get rid of me so easily this time. “I would suggest that you use this time to bond with some of your co-workers.”

“Why do you do this?” I asked, refusing to back down.

“Do what?” He sounded so innocent; I almost rolled my eyes.

“You know what I’m talking about, Dylan,” I pressed.

“As far as I’m concerned, we had a corporate event and the two of us were a team doing an activity we were asked to perform. It went well and that is a good thing. I don’t see how that warrants further discussion,” he said, taking a sip of his drink.

I felt like I was grasping at straws here. Every time I felt like I had made some progress with Dylan, he was quick to pull me right back down to reality of our professional relationship.

“We make a good team,” he admitted.

“Then what about last night? Did we make a good team then, too?”

Dylan seemed immediately alarmed as I brought up the topic. He looked around to check if anyone was eavesdropping on the conversation before opening his mouth to answer.

“I must apologize to you for that,” he said in a low voice, seemingly embarrassed. “I didn’t mean it to happen. I’m so sorry, Kathy. That was not a good idea and it should not have happened.”

“Funny how it’s always a good idea at the time,” I couldn’t help but let a little bitterness seep into my tone.

He did not have a reply for me this time. By now, he could clearly see that I was not going to let go so easily. I was fuming and didn’t hide it anymore. I wanted him to admit to the fact that he had fallen for me too and he needed me by his side. Finally, Dylan gestured to me to follow him and lead me to a private booth.

“We can talk here,” he said, setting down his drink on the table.

“There’s nothing to talk about. It’s always the same thing with you. One moment, you’re so warm and we get along so well. And then the next, you’re back to being cold and acting like there’s nothing between us.”
