Once again, it’s not a question. “Yes, I want to stay.”

I pull on his suit jacket until Andrei follows me down onto the bed, and I part my thighs for him as he climbs over me. He kneels over me, taking off his jacket and shirt before his hand caresses my belly. The bump is just noticeable enough to show I’m pregnant. He leans in toward my lips and kisses me as his hands open the buttons on my plain shirtdress.

When he enters me, I believe him again. I feel his strength in me and believe every word he’s ever said. He will protect me and the baby. I don’t need to run and hide, not when my husband will protect me from his enemies.

He drives deeper, and reason slips away, giving way to the incredible feeling of having him inside me. Ifeelhis love, and his words make this feel even more electric as I clench around him, holding on to his back as he moves. He moans, mouth pressing against my chest as his hands slip my bra over my breasts.

Gasping as his lips tease my sensitive nipples, I thrust my hips into his. I sigh with pleasure against his ear, holding tightly onto his hips with my thighs. His teeth graze my nipples gently, and his gaze pierces mine as I float off in an orgasmic haze.

My body vibrates as the pleasure builds. I moan as tears trail down my cheeks and my feet hang aimlessly in the air.So good. It feels too good to be loved. I can’t leave Andrei. He presses his mouth against my neck as he comes, squeezing his eyes shut, and then his eyelids flutter open as if coming out of a daze. Andrei gazes down at me, his expression serious and then playful as a smile overtakes his face.

“I should’ve done that sooner,” he teases. “To keep you in line.”

“You’re awful,” I giggle.

“No,” he says, “I’m in love. I love you, Paige.”

A warmth tingles through me. It’s the first time Andrei has said that after sex. And I press my face against his broad chest to hide my tears.

Chapter 22

Paige

In the morning, reality crashes back—bright and early—with the sun.

In my robe, I slip out of the bedroom while Andrei is in the shower and hurry downstairs to Emma’s. She stops dressing for school when she sees me standing by her bedroom door, and we hurry into the bathroom, where we think we can talk in private.

“What happened?” she whispers.

“Kenney’s dead. Shot in the chest.”

“I heard at school.” She sits down heavily on the edge of the bathtub. “Was it Talia?”

“At school?” I look at her, surprised. “And why do you think it was Talia?”

“Because the police let Andrei go,” she replies, and I sit down beside her, incredulous at everything she’s just said.

Emma takes a deep breath and explains, “They gossip like crazy at Twin Oaks posh academy for future delinquents. But Natasha was the one that told me that Andrei stayed with Kenney until the police came and took him away for questioning. Andrei is cooperating. Apparently it’s a big no-no to shoot a cop in Bratva World.” She pauses, holding herself tight. “I would’ve looked for you last night and told you, but I didn’t want to go into Eva’s room.”

I nod, understanding that we deal with grief differently. “Why did you ask if Talia had done it?”

“That’s the rumor at school,” she replies. “Either her or Gleb. I’m not supposed to know, but I made friends who tell me everything.”

“And what do they say about Andrei?” I ask urgently.

Emma stands and grabs her toothbrush, slowly putting a large glob of toothpaste on the bristles before turning it on. “It’s probably better that you don’t know, Paige.”

The debate in my head doesn’t last long. “No secrets, Emma.”

In the mirror, she looks at me and then places the toothbrush down on the counter. “It’s not flattering. They call himd’yavol. They tease me and ask if you sold your soul to be his wife.”

“You’re right. It isn’t nice,” I reply coldly. “You will tell me if they say anything we can use.”

She nods while her electric toothbrush whirls.

“I guess we ought to do something for Kenney,” I say out loud.

“Natasha says Andrei has taken care of all the expenses, but I don’t think we’ll be welcome at a cop’s funeral.” Emma spits and rinses her mouth. “Even if he was our shithead cousin.”
