“Tell your sister that I forgive her.” He lifts his chin. “For jilting me at my own wedding.”

“Mention her again,” my voice lowers, “and I will kill you here where you stand.”

He slumps onto the floor and sits there with his legs splayed open, showing off though I know he’s scared. His hand slips behind his thigh, and his gaze moves quickly to my eyes.

“Sorry about your mother,” he says.

Gleb raises a concealed gun, but I want him alive. He aims a shot that shoves me back, and I’m lucky the bullet wasn’t tipped. He stares stupidly as if I’m Superman.

What? He hasn’t heard of bulletproof vests?

I reach over before he can fire off another round and rip the gun from his hand. I lose control, and my hand smacks him across his face as if it had made the decision on its own.

“Fuck you, Barinov!” He wipes the blood away from his busted lip. “Fuck you and that stupid whore you call a wife.”

My eyes flare as I lift my hand again, but I calm myself quickly. I want to pull him apart, starting with his smug face. I grab Gleb by the arm and haul him out of the room. Marching, I drag him—still half naked—through the club to the door. He stumbles over the strewn bodies as he struggles to remain upright.

“You’re not going to kill him?” Dmitri’s shocked expression is worth dealing with Gleb.

I laugh. “We’re going to dump him downtown. He can find his way home from there. And the world can laugh at him.”

Chapter 43

Andrei

“Talia is trying to reach you.” In my office, Natasha acts disinterested as she passes another message from Talia to me. Talia was livid when she learned of the fate of her men and Gleb’s. To make matters worse, the police are now involved, which draws attention to all the Bratvas. My “crazed” actions are exposing us to harsh scrutiny, she claims.

“Tell her I’ll call her later,” I reply.

Natasha smirks. “We have another problem to deal with first, Andrei Vasilyevich.”

“What is it?” I ask wearily.

“It’s in the garage.”

I glance down at my bespoke suit, tailored on Savile Row. It’s been a while since I’ve worn it. Maybe I should go and surprise her. Perhaps I should swing by the inn and bring her favorite chocolates later. No, not with all this hanging over us. It wouldn’t be right. Besides, I haven’t heard from Paige. She wants me to leave her alone.

I clench my hands into tight fists. The sound of my knuckles cracking ends the brief silence as I stare out the window past the terrace and toward the garage silhouetted in front of leafless trees.

“Andrei Vasilyevich?” Natasha’s voice softly brings me back.

I glance at her, and I can see the apprehension in her eyes. Is she worried about me? Not Natasha. But what I’ve been doing might cause concern.

Natasha keeps up with my pounding steps as we cross the lawn toward Pasha, a new recruit who stands outside the door. It’s been months since I’ve been inside the garage. Back then it was Viktor, and he lived to thank Paige. Whoever is waiting won’t be so lucky this time.

Pasha opens the door without looking at us and steps aside, allowing Natasha and me to enter.

I scan the room and see the man tied up on the ground.

“That’s the problem, Andrei Vasilyevich.” Natasha juts her chin at him.

“Where’s Dmitri?” I ask.

“He’s on business. Pasha can stand in.”

Pasha enters when Natasha opens the door. He stares at the man on the floor but looks away quickly.

“Explain to me what happened,” I order her.
