There’s a quick knock, and then the door opens. Smiling, Emma races in ahead of a male doctor I haven’t met before.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” Emma says.

“I didn’t know you were coming,” I reply. “Don’t you have school?” Instead of answering, she giggles and then looks at the new doctor.

“Hello, Ms. Reyes,” he says, holding out his hand. “I’m Dr. Glenn Matthews. I’m a partner here in the practice.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” I reply, taking his hand and shaking it.

“Nice to meet you too,” he says, his eyes twinkling. “I knew your cousin, Kenney Grant, very well. I wanted to come in and extend my sympathy to you and your family.”

It’s kind of him to pay his respects. And I thank him while wondering how well he knew Kenney and why he has a good opinion of him. He must not have known him well. A flush slowly begins to creep up my face. I wonder if Dr. Matthews knows who I’m married to. Did Kenney talk crap about me to all his friends?

“I just wanted to offer my condolences,” he reiterates. “And if you should need anything …” The doctor looks expectantly at me.

“No,” I say quickly. “And thank you for your kind thoughts.”

Emma is practically dancing across the room before Dr. Matthews shuts the door. She hurries over to me and gives me a goofy hug as if I’ve won two lifetime lotteries.

“What is wrong with you?” I hiss. “And why are you not in school?”

Emma scoffs as if my questions are none of her concern. “Did you see that?” she asks. “Did you see him?”

“Emma, I don’t have time for this. My feet are bloated, and my back feels like someone is trying to pull my spine out through my butt.” I nudge her off me. “What is going on?”

Emma takes a big breath. “So, I walked into the waiting room looking for you, but you had already gone in. And that doctor was behind the glass talking to the receptionist. And I heard your name. So, I walked over, but they didn’t notice me. And he said he’d like to meet you because he knew Kenney. And the nurse told him you’re almost due, and where to find you.”

I shake my head, completely lost.

Emma sighs. “He likes you.”

“No,” I scoff loudly. “He came in here because he knew Kenney, and Kenney probably told him that I was his crazy cousin who married the mobster.”

Emma shakes her head and, in a firm voice, says, “No. Paige. If he thought you were trouble, he wouldn’t come in here and introduce himself.” She pretends to be Dr. Matthews by deepening her voice. “Hello, I’m Dr. Handsome, and you must be Ms. Crazy.” Emma grabs my arm. “No, Paige. The universe is sending you a reminder that you’re still hot and in demand.”

She’s trying to make me feel better, but it has the opposite effect. Instead, I miss Andrei even more.

I want so badly to see him here. I still want it and hope he’ll walk through the door. I can picture him in his fitted suit, his dark, touchable hair, and that smirky smile that sends chills all over my body. I want him to tell me that he still loves me and can’t live without me.

I’m breaking fast. I don’t care about the Bratva. I just want him back.

I say none of this to Emma, and she watches in confusion as I burst into an avalanche of heart-wrenching tears.

My doctor walks into the room and glances over before sitting down at the computer. “There, there, Ms. Reyes. I know it’s hard, but you’re almost there.”

Thanks, that makes it all better.

Is it hopeless to want what I want? My due date is quickly approaching, and for the first time, I feel a strange sense of anticipation that the future will be better. I wasn’t sure before, but I must keep doing what I’m doing. I love Andrei, and loving him still hurts, but the baby is my new beginning.

Paige, you can do it, and it will be worth it, with or without him.

Chapter 54

Andrei

Today is Paige’s appointment with her OB-GYN, and I had planned to drive her there. And I would’ve gone to pick her up if she were staying at the inn, but I’m certain I’m not welcome at Gerald Reyes’s old house. The alarm on my phone chimes again, but I stay on the road headed for the Greenwich section of Twin Rivers. I must talk Sonya out of marrying her favorite guard of the month.

I park my Lamborghini in front of an ornate metal and glass storefront on a swanky block filled with designer shops.
