Chapter 33

Emilia

I’m nervous the entire way back to Woodstock. Carter and I haven’t really discussed what we’d do or say when we went back, and I’m worried.

Kate storms into the house excitedly while Carter and I follow behind her.

“You’re being really quiet. You okay?” Carter whispers. I nod and help him carry our luggage into the house. I know my dad isn’t home yet, so there’s no point in going back to my own house yet. I might as well say hi to Helen first.

Helen smiles at us as we walk in, her eyes glittering with unshed tears. She walks up to Carter and me and hugs us both, forcing us into a group hug. Carter chuckles and throws his arms around us, lifting us both off the ground.

“Missed you, Mom,” he says. She smiles up at him and grabs our hands.

“I’m so glad you’re back,” she says, her voice trembling. Kate throws herself at us and joins in on our hug, squeezing us all tightly.

“Yeah, missed you, Mom,” she says.

Helen leads us all to the kitchen and the three of us smile in delight when we find the counter filled with our favorite foods. She went all out for us.

“Helen,” I murmur. “You shouldn’t have.”

She throws her arm around my shoulder and shakes her head. “All my babies are finally back for the summer. I’m just so happy, Milly. The house hasn’t been the same without you three.”

I hug her tighter, my heart breaking. I don’t like the idea of her being at home all by herself. She’s gotten so used to having us around.

“I have a dozen recipes for us to try, Milly.” She glances over at Kate and grins. “And I booked a spa day for the two of us, Kate.”

Kate squeals happily, making me laugh. She’s been in high spirits all week, and I’m happy to see her so excited. I was worried she’d hate coming back, or that she’d be bored. I’m hoping her excitement will make it easier for her to accept the news of Carter and me dating.

I glance at him as he takes out slices of cake for the three of us. Helen made each of us our favorites. Carter grabs my slice of chocolate cake and grins wickedly before taking a bite. I lunge toward him and snatch the fork out of his hand.

“Don’t even,” I warn him. His arm snakes around my waist and he pulls me flush against him, my breasts crashing against his chest. Carter grabs the fork from my hand and brings another serving to my lips. Just as I’m about to close my lips around the fork, he pulls it away and shoves it in his mouth.

“You… you... you don’t even like chocolate!” I shout. I glare at him and grab my fork back, turning my back to him in annoyance. “I can’t believe you ate my cake.”

I pull my plate toward me and wrap my arm around it protectively. It isn’t until Helen bursts out laughing that I remember we aren’t alone. She glances at Carter and me and smiles in relief. “I see you two are back to your usual antics. I knew being in the same city again would be good for you two.”

Carter looks into my eyes, silently telling me this would be a good time to tell her, but I shake my head. I’m nervous. I don’t know for sure how to tell her, but I don’t think right now is the right moment.

Carter looks disappointed but nods. Helen chats non-stop as we all eat our cake. It’s obvious she’s beyond happy to have us back, and I’m terrified of ruining her happiness so soon. I know Kate isn’t going to like us dating, and I don’t want to create any conflict.

“Come on, let me help you take your luggage home,” Carter says. I nod and rise, grabbing one of my bags while Carter gets the rest. He’s quiet as we walk into my house, and I know he’s annoyed with me.

“This week, okay?” I murmur. Carter sighs and carries my luggage up the stairs. When we reach my bedroom, he drops it all on the floor before sitting down on my bed. I walk up to him and sit down in his lap. I cup his cheek and turn his face toward mine. Carter looks at me dejectedly.

“I love you, Emilia. I love you with my heart and soul. I know things aren’t going to go as smoothly as we want them to, but I also won’t hide how I feel about you. We’ve done enough of that. It’s time we start living our life.”

I rest my head on his shoulder and press a gentle kiss to his neck. “I love you too, Carter. Let’s tell them at the end of this week, okay? Let’s give your Mom a bit of time with us before… you know.”

Carter nods and tilts my face up. I kiss him and smile as I push him flat on his back. He grins wickedly and looks at me through lowered lashes. “You know what, baby? I’ve never had you in your bed.”

I chuckle and straddle him, not at all surprised to find him hardening already. Carter turns us over so he’s on top and kisses me until I’m breathless. His lips move to my neck and he trails a path down to my chest.

“Off,” he says, yanking on my clothes. I giggle and grab his t-shirt, pulling it over his head. We’re both impatient as we undress each other. I pull him toward me as soon as we’re finally naked in my bed.

Carter leans over me and kisses me so tenderly that my heart feels ready to burst. “More,” I murmur. “You can’t stay away too long. Besides, my dad should be home in an hour or so.”

Carter groans and glares at me as his fingers find their way between my legs. He keeps me right at the edge, and no matter how I squirm or plead, he won’t give in.
