Law: Chapter 1

Nine months. I couldn’t believe it had been nine months already since I began prospecting for the Archangel’s Warriors MC. I was too old for this shit, but what else did I have to do with my life? I was thirty-eight years old, single, and other than my bike, my truck, and an apartment I rented, I didn’t have much else. Sure, I had a job, but that’s to be expected. How else would I eat?

Also, I still had my old partner, Nyssa, who I called my best friend. Through her, I’d gained her husband, Hawk, and their daughter, Isabella, as friends. No, they were family. However, it hurt to see them so happy at times, while I still had a hole in my heart. One that I didn’t know would ever go away.

It had been eight years since I lost Frankie. She had been the only woman I ever loved. When her father had her murdered to protect his drug trade, my faith and ability to be a cop had been tested, as well as my desire to go on living. I’d almost gone renegade on him and hunted him and his sons down like they were vermin, but Nyssa had prevented that. I couldn’t face the idea of leaving her completely alone if I was caught or killed. So, I’d let the law do what they needed to do to send him and his two sons to prison.

Prison to me was too damn good for the bastards, and Matteo, Nyssa’s great-uncle, Frankie’s dad, and his sons, Carlo and Anthony, had still ended up trying to run their criminal enterprise from prison. Thankfully, Bull, the Hunters Creek President of the Warriors, had connections to some badass people in that prison. He never fully explained who or how and I didn’t ask. After receiving a visit from his son, Lorenzo—the only one not involved in the family business and the only one not sent away—and being put on notice by Bull’s “friends”, they’d backed the hell off and left Nyssa and me alone. That was four years ago. As far as we knew, they were honoring the agreement, or maybe threat was a better word. If they did change their minds, I knew the Warriors and I would make sure they drew their last breaths.

I still wished I’d figured out a way to protect Frankie. If I had, she’d be here living a wonderful life, hopefully, with me as her husband. However, it looked like God had other plans for me. What the hell they were, I didn’t know. Being lonely and constantly looking for something wasn’t making me happy.

I was searching and finding nothing. My job with the Dublin Falls police department no longer helped fill that void. That’s why I finally gave in to Terror’s numerous requests for me to prospect with his club. To be honest, I’d been wanting to do it anyway for years, but I didn’t think I could get away with it as a member of the police department.

It was still questionable. There were some who looked at me uneasily—more than they did before—when it was known I was only associated with the club, but I didn’t care. It was something to pass the time and made me feel like I was doing something good in a tiny way. God knows there were enough days that I didn’t feel that way when people found ways to get out of the justice they deserved.

Sure, cleaning up puke and other bodily fluids at the clubhouse wasn’t my idea of fun, but I’d seen worse at crime scenes. Running errands all over town and beyond was time consuming, but not hard. Any shit job they could find, they assigned it to me or the newest prospect, Lance. At least it kept me busy. Also, if needed, we helped to protect their families and take out the human trash. That part was what I loved.

The club was more than understanding about me not being available all the time, like Lance. Typically, as a prospect, I’d be on call for them twenty-four seven. However, due to the fact I worked as a police officer, they had to work around my schedule. I’d been so damn lucky they were willing to do it. If I wasn’t working or sleeping, I was doing whatever the club wanted me to do.

My prospecting duties were what had me in the clubhouse tonight. This evening, things were pretty quiet so far. It wasn’t that late, but most of the guys were home with their old ladies and kids. It was a Monday night. The few single members were hanging in the common room, shooting the shit and having a drink. I was on bar duty tonight while Lance handled the gate until eleven, then it would be left closed until morning.

I quickly handed Sniper a new beer. He, Gunner, Bandit, Coyote, Lance, and I were the lone wolves around the compound. The rest had all found their mates and settled down. I wasn’t holding my breath that I’d be joining their exclusive inner club. This looked like my future—crusty bachelor.

“This place is dead. Ever since Blade and Cassia’s wedding, we’ve been wasting our time. Jesus, the women coming to party from town and the bunnies aren’t getting it,” Sniper bitched.

“Oh yeah, you looking for some new meat?” Gunner teased him. I fought to hide my grin. I didn’t know what Sniper was complaining about. Every time I turned around, he seemed to have a woman hanging off him or chasing him to get into his pants.

“It’s the same old shit, man. They wanna come up here and sleep with a biker, then run home and tell all their friends about the dangerous thing they did. They’ll giggle and gasp then go have foo-foo coffee and we never see them again. If they don’t, then we’ve got the ones like the bunnies who think they have some kind of ownership over us and secretly are trying to trick us into making them our old ladies. It’s enough to turn me off sex,” Sniper grumbled.

“Maybe you should expand your playing field,” Coyote suggested. He was relaxing against the bar, talking to Bandit. Sniper raised his eyebrows at him, as if to ask him to explain. He did.

“What I mean is, if the women aren’t getting it, why not check out the men around town? There are some fine ones,” he told Sniper with a wink.

Now, I knew, although they didn’t flaunt it, that Coyote and Bandit were either bisexual or possibly a combination of bisexual and homosexual. I hadn’t ever seen Bandit with women around the clubhouse, but that could be because he was more private than most. They were always together, but I had no idea if they were just best friends or friend friends. No one asked. It wasn’t our business if they were. To each his own was my philosophy.

I knew a majority of motorcycle clubs wouldn’t allow their members to be anything but straight up heterosexual. The Warriors didn’t care, as long as you didn’t hurt anyone and were faithful to your chosen significant other or others. Steel and Hammer were heterosexual and shared their wife, for God’s sake. Tiger and Thorn were bisexual, and they shared Neriah. I wondered if that might be what Coyote and Bandit were looking for.

“Are you kidding me? Jesus Christ, Coyote, I’m not attracted to men. Sorry to disappoint you. My cock is one hundred percent only interested in pussy or female ass,” he told him with a smirk.

Coyote didn’t seem offended. He shrugged and grinned. “You don’t know what you’re missing. The human body is beautiful in so many ways, whether it’s male or female. A tight ass is a tight ass, just like a fantastic mouth is to die for even if it’s attached to a man,” he added.

“Forget I said anything. Go find yourself a man if you want, but I’ll stick to women. All I’m saying is I wish there was some new blood around town. I feel like we need to search away from Dublin Falls to find someone. Don’t you guys want someone to go home to at night?” Sniper asked.

Bandit had kept quiet up to this point, but I guess he couldn’t keep his mouth shut anymore. He was gazing intently at Coyote as he answered Sniper.

“Yeah, I think we all want that. It’s natural to want to settle down and have a family. Just because we’re bikers, that doesn’t mean we don’t have the same biological tendencies. Sure, some might take some ingenuity to get that family, such as adopting or marrying someone who already has kids. Being with a man for the rest of my life wouldn’t stop me from having kids to share with the man I love.”

Coyote didn’t argue. He just stared intently back at Bandit. Hmm, it was looking more and more like they might be more than best friends. It would be interesting to see what happened and how the rest of the club would react. So far, any non-traditional throuples or triads had involved a woman in the mix. The couples were all male-female. What would they be like if we added a male-male couple to the family?

Our rather enlightening conversation was interrupted by the door to the clubhouse opening and Lance walking in. His coming to get something while on gate duty was unusual, so I perked up. Good thing I did because he wasn’t alone. Walking behind him, looking scared and stressed, was someone we all recognized. It was Tonya, Soleil’s friend.

I’d met her briefly a couple of years ago when Falcon met and wooed Soleil to be his. Tonya was her close friend, who had been married to another then friend, Dan Ewing, a fellow superbike racer like Soleil. Everyone had been surprised when they met Tonya, because she looked like she could be Soleil’s twin, even though they swore they weren’t related.

Falcon had voiced his concern when Soleil couldn’t hear him, that Dan had only married Tonya because she looked like Soleil and he’d dated Soleil first. I didn’t know if it was true or not, but not long after they were introduced to the Warriors, Tonya got pregnant with her third baby and found out her husband was cheating on her. It had devastated her, but she’d stood strong. Even though she was pregnant, she’d divorced his cheating ass.

After that, she moved away. I hadn’t heard much about her until a couple of months ago, when I overheard some of the ladies talking about her moving back to Dublin Falls. She wanted to be closer to Soleil, they said. I guess she didn’t have any other family she could rely on.

Being a divorced mom to three kids, all of them under five years old, had to be tough as hell. All I had was admiration for her. Looking at her now, I wondered what brought her here this time of night. Shouldn’t she be with her kids? Or visiting Soleil and Falcon and their little one, Lara? I found myself coming around the bar and going over to her. Something was pushing me to her to find out if something was wrong. The others were doing the same. She looked surprised and shrank back a bit. I stopped a few feet away. I didn’t want to scare her.
