“I’d like to say forever but take enough to be comfortable for several weeks. We’ll play it by ear. Now that’s out of the way, you go pack and I’ll watch the kids. Why don’t you work on their stuff first? Then when it’s nap time, we can work on your stuff and anything else, so we don’t have to disturb them in their room.”

His reasoning was sound, so I agreed. Before he let me up to get started, he gave me another toe-curling kiss. I walked off in a daze. I heard him chuckling as I did. Damn man, I’d have to work on short-circuiting his brain like he did mine.

It was late afternoon, after the kids had had lunch, took their naps, and woke up, before we were packed and on our way back to the compound. I felt funny loading it all back into the car. I knew my nib-nosed neighbor, Prissy, was probably breaking her neck, watching us out her window. She’d be gossiping all over the place as soon as I left.

I was proven right when she came hustling out to catch me right before we left. I wished I’d been just five minutes faster. She had a fake smile on her face. “Oh, Tonya, I’ve been meaning to come see you. I thought you and the kids had moved back. Didn’t I see you bring in your stuff yesterday morning?”

“Hi, Prissy, yes, you did, but that was only so I could do laundry and then decide on what I really wanted to take with us. I stayed last night to be sure I didn’t forget anything. We’re going to be staying with the Warriors for a while longer.”

“And this fine man is here to help, I see. Hello again. Are you Tonya’s personal helper?” She simpered up at him as she batted her eyelashes. I wanted to pull those fake spiders off her eyelids. She had those fake ones and wore them all the time. They were huge and looked so fake and reminded me of hairy spider legs. I don’t know how she thought those were attractive.

Law gave her a polite although not encouraging smile. It was one I knew he probably used with the public when he was working. “I’m whatever she needs.”

“Well, in that case, what do I need to do to sign up to have you help me?” She simpered more. I had to grit my teeth to keep from going at her with my nails.

“Sorry, but I’m only Tonya’s helper. It’s my privilege and job as her boyfriend.”

The shock on her face at his announcement that he was my boyfriend was comical. I held back my laugh. “B-boyfriend? I thought you said the other day he wasn’t your boyfriend.”

“I did and I’m sorry. We weren’t announcing anything to the general public until after we’d had a chance to talk to our friends and family. They now know, so we don’t have a need to keep it a secret.”

“So, you told your ex-husband then. I noticed he hasn’t stopped by in a few days.”

“No, I didn’t tell him. I haven’t spoken to him nor do I see it’s any of his concern who I date. Just like I don’t care who he dates.”

“Well, he is the kids’ father. He has the right to know what kind of men you bring around his children. What if you decide to get married? He should have a say in that,” she said, outraged.

“Ma’am, I hate to be rude but Dan Ewing gave up the right to know anything about Tonya’s personal life the day they got divorced. As long as I’m not abusive to her and the kids, that’s all he needs to worry about. I’m not abusive and I’ll protect them with my life. End of story. Now, we hate to run, but we’re expected at the compound for dinner. Have a good evening.”

He took my arm and turned me around so I was facing away from Prissy. He walked me to the car. It was all I could do not to turn back and see what she looked like.

“Hurry, before she says one more thing about Dan and I get into trouble,” he whispered to me.

I couldn’t help but laugh. He grinned then opened the door to help me in the car. The kids were already in it, sitting in the air conditioning. They clapped their hands excitedly when they saw me get in. They were thrilled to be going back to the compound. Law didn’t let me close the door until he gave me a kiss.

“I’ll be right behind you. Drive safe.”

“I will. You too. You’re on the bike. People are nuts,” I warned him.

He nodded then shut my door. I waited until he started his bike before pulling out of the parking lot and heading toward the outskirts of town. I was getting nervous thinking of the upcoming meeting tonight. I prayed the club wouldn’t have any objections. I knew it would hurt Law to leave the club if they refused to let him claim me as his old lady. He kept assuring me that they wouldn’t all afternoon, but I still worried.

Law:

I knew the wait was slowly driving Tonya crazy. She had been worried about the club not accepting my claim all day. I tried to reassure her, but it didn’t help much. I couldn’t figure out why she was so worried that they wouldn’t. Everyone liked her and had nothing but nice things to say about her. They adored her kids. They fit in with the rest of us.

I was able to distract her for a bit while we unpacked the stuff she brought from her apartment. There were three bedrooms in the guesthouse, but she was only using two. When I asked her why not separate the older kids from Dylan, she said she felt better when they were together. Plus, at the apartment, she hadn’t had a choice but to have them all in one bedroom. I was hoping she’d relax and reconsider. I could see why the twins would want to be together, but Dylan might like his own space when he got older.

However, if she didn’t, no big deal. If I got my way, she wouldn’t be living there for long, or at least not for more than maybe a year. I hadn’t talked to her about it yet, since I knew things were moving fast for her, but I wanted to follow the Warrior tradition of building a house within the compound when you found your old lady. I figured mine might take longer, due to the fact I was only a prospect. No way they’d let me do it before patching in. What if they did and something happened and I didn’t get voted in? No, I’d have to work on that issue later. I was praying they’d stick to the usual one-year mark to make their decision. If they did, that would mean I could be one in three months.

After a tension-filled day, it was finally time to go meet with the club. I convinced her it would be better to go to the clubhouse than wait at the guesthouse. At least there, I knew there would be other women and kids. They would help keep her mind busy and hopefully off what was happening in church.

I handled Dena and Daniel while she carried Dylan to the clubhouse. Inside, I was glad to see I was right. Several of the ladies were there with their kids. They immediately called her over to sit with them. I saw the look of relief on her face when she sat down.

Giving her one last kiss and telling her not to stress, I followed the guys into church when Terror hollered to get our asses moving. I saw the looks that kiss got from the women and the guys who had no idea what I was about to ask. It was strange going into church. It wasn’t a place a prospect was often invited to enter. I stood back as they took their seats. Terror looked over at me.

“Law, you can sit at the end of the table beside Hawk. This shouldn’t take long.”

I did as he ordered. As soon as I did, he got down to business. That’s one of the things I liked about Terror. He usually didn’t beat around the bush or sugarcoat anything.
