“He might, but Law and the guys are smart enough not to get caught. Law is a cop, Tonya. He knows what he can and can’t do. If he does something to Dan, I can guarantee you, it won’t be where he can be caught or leave any evidence behind. An ass beating might do Dan some good.”

“You’re probably right. I’m just worried. Dan has taken enough of my happiness away. I don’t want to let him have more.”

“Well, if you want, I can go beat his ass for you. I doubt he’d convince the cops a woman beat him,” she said with a wink.

I knew she was half serious. She might look fragile, but she was strong and knew how to take care of herself. JJ had made sure of that when she was growing up. I laughed at the image that came to mind. She grinned then led me over to one of the couches. We settled down to wait and see what would happen. I prayed it wouldn’t be anything to come back on Law or the club.

Law:

I was finishing up a repair project at Ms. Marie’s farm when I got the call from Terror informing me that Dan was at the compound, going crazy at the gate. He told me that Tonya had witnessed it and had been trying to calm him down. It pissed me off that he’d come anywhere near her. Thank God the kids were at the farm and didn’t see it.

As much as I might personally dislike him, I didn’t want him to completely turn his kids away from him. If he could eventually straighten up, he could still be a part of their lives. However, if he couldn’t and he remained a threat to them in any way, there was nothing in this world I wouldn’t do to protect them.

As I raced up the road to the compound on my bike, I saw him come into view. He was still standing outside the gate. He was pacing agitatedly and throwing rocks at it. That wouldn’t do him any good. The gate was reinforced steel and the glass windows in it were made of bulletproof glass. The club had made that change a few years ago.

As I got nearer, he turned and came charging toward me. I swerved to miss him then hurriedly parked my bike and got off. Seeing that I was there, the guys opened the gate and came out. Dan came running toward me with his hand in the air. He had a rock in it.

“It’s all your fault! You filled her head with lies and now she won’t let me see her or the kids. Those are my kids, not yours. I’m taking them home where they belong,” he screamed as he threw the rock. I ducked and it sailed over my head.

“Dan, calm the fuck down. No one told Tonya lies about you. Can’t you hear yourself? You’re talking crazy. You grabbed her before. She’s scared of what you might do to her or the kids. You keep talking about moving back in with them. It’s not going to happen. That’s delusional talk.”

“She has to come back. You don’t understand. I need her. Nothing works right without her. I told her I was sorry. Why won’t she forgive me?”

He sounded like he was whining now. His mood fluctuations were so erratic, I was sure he was high. I cautiously walked closer to him.

“Be careful, Law. He can’t be trusted,” Menace warned me.

“I will,” I assured him. As I got close to Dan, I stared at his eyes. Besides appearing to be wild-looking, his pupils were dilated. He was weaving on his feet. His hands were shaking. I’d arrested enough people who were drunk or on drugs to know he was definitely on some kind of drug.

“Dan, you can’t be here. The judge issued a restraining order. You’re not allowed to come near Tonya or the kids or to call them. You can go to jail for coming here.”

“Fuck the judge! She’s my wife. I’ll call her or see her whenever I want. I told her you ruined us. She hung up on me, so I came to talk to her in person. You made her say all those things,” he hissed.

“I didn’t make her say anything. All I care about is that she and the kids are safe.”

“Safe! Why wouldn’t they be safe with me? I’m their father. She’s my wife. Nothing will ever change that. She’s just whoring herself out to you and your club to get back at me. I know it. She’ll be punished for that, but then I’ll forgive her, just like she needs to forgive me,” he ranted.

Terror had come over to stand next to me. He quietly whispered to me as we kept a close eye on Dan, who was back to wandering in circles, screaming and tearing at his hair like a madman.

“Law, we have to call the cops and have him taken in. I’m all for a beatdown, but he’s not in his right mind. He’s a danger to himself and others. He needs help.”

As much as I wanted to argue, I knew he was right. “Okay, have someone call them. I’ll try to keep him busy until they get here. Where’s Tonya?”

“Falcon sent her to the clubhouse and Soleil is with her. She’s upset as you can imagine but she’s safe.”

He turned and I saw him nod to Menace, who took out his phone. I guess he was designated to be the one to make the call. Suddenly, Dan swung around and came charging at me. I swiftly dodged him, while Terror got out of the way too. As he went stumbling past, I took him to the ground. He fought like a wild animal. As we struggled and Falcon and Menace came to help me, I caught sight of the knife he had tucked under his shirt. Thank God he hadn’t been aware enough to pull that. I removed it and threw it toward the gate. Tiger picked it up.

Once he was subdued enough, I quickly searched to make sure he didn’t have any other weapons on him. There weren’t. Menace handed me a pair of handcuffs. Lance had walked up while I fought Dan. Maybe he brought them but I didn’t ask. Mine were at the house since I wasn’t on duty. Standing him up, I marched him to the small shack we had by the gate after I got the cuffs on him. I shoved him down in a chair.

“Jesus, I hope the police believe how out of control he was,” Lance muttered.

Dan was now sitting there mumbling under his breath and paying no attention to us. It was like he was in his own world.

“They will. I caught it all on tape,” I heard. I looked up to find Smoke had come out of nowhere.

“You did?” Lance asked.

“Everything that goes on along these walls and at this gate are recorded. I have audio and visuals of the whole thing.”
