“I saw you. I saw you with her. Don’t deny it. You were all chummy and you hugged her. She was smiling and laughing. I saw you. You wouldn’t act like that with someone while you were working.”

“Tonya, I have no idea what you’re talking about. You saw me with who? When?”

“Today! I was in town and I saw you when I was leaving. You were at one of those houses on the edge of town with a blonde woman. You came out of her house and you hugged her,” she sobbed.

Understanding dawned and when it did, I couldn’t help but chuckle. That was the wrong thing to do. Her tears instantly turned to anger. Next thing I knew, a figurine on the night table came whizzing at my head. I ducked, and it crashed to the carpet.

“Don’t you dare laugh at me, Jake Cane! I won’t be laughed at or made a fool of. I was stupid to trust you. I won’t be with another cheater. Dan did the same thing. Laughed at me when I found out. Go ahead, tell me how inadequate I am as a woman and it’s my fault you had to cheat. How I’m not able to give you what you want. Go ahead. I’ve heard it all before.”

The pain in her voice gutted me. Fuck this. I wasn’t going to stand on the other side of the bed while she was hurting. I darted toward her. I took her by surprise. She cried out as I wrapped her in my arms and I took her down to the mattress. She began to struggle against me immediately. I held her tightly. When she couldn’t get me to let her loose, she started to yell.

“Let me go, you bastard! I’m done. Thank God I didn’t give up my place. The kids and I will be out of here by morning. You can bring whoever you want back here to fuck. I hope whoever she is, she knows not to expect you to be faithful. I’m tired of never being enough. Maybe I should become a lesbian.”

Her rant was all over the place and I worked hard not to laugh at her lesbian remark. I knew there was no way she’d do that. My Valkyrie loved my cock too much. All I had to do was convince her not to leave me and my cock. I had to set her straight on what she saw. Damnit, why hadn’t I had someone else go to Janine’s house?

She was still fighting to get away. I had to wrap her hands with one of mine and hold them above her head. She tried to get her knee between us, but I crushed her to the bed. Not enough to hurt her, but enough to hold her down. She was panting with exertion by the time she weakened her struggling. As soon as she did, I started to explain.

“I admit, I was at a house at the edge of town today. You did see me with a blonde and she hugged me.” Her body stiffened and she tried to move again. I kept her from wiggling away.

“However, I wasn’t there having sex with her. I’ve never had sex with Janine. Her man would kill me if I ever even thought of it.”

“Then why didn’t you mention going there when I asked you what you did today? I tried to believe you wouldn’t cheat, but I’m terrified I’m wrong. I was before.”

“Baby, I can’t tell you how to believe me other than you have to listen to what your gut tells you and your heart. I love you. I will never cheat on you like Dan did. The thought of hurting you like that and losing you would kill me. Hell, I know if you cheated on me, it would destroy me.”

“Then who is Janine and why were you at her house when you were supposed to be working? Why were you hugging her?”

“I was picking up something as a surprise for you.”

“A surprise? What’re you talking about?”

“Can you bear with me for a little bit? We need to go to the clubhouse first. I was going to tell you that we needed to go when I got home, but you were acting strange. I swear, everything will become clear after we go there. Everyone is expecting us.”

A look of horror came over her face. “They’re what? Oh my God, why didn’t you say something? I’m a wreck. I need to clean up. Get off me.” She strained to get her hands loose. This time I let her then eased off her. She came bounding to her feet and ran into the bathroom. She slammed the door and I heard it lock.

“Tonya, if you don’t come out of there, I’m going to kick the damn door down. No hiding from me,” I growled.

“I’m not hiding. I’m trying to fix my face and if you’re in here, I’ll never be able to do it. I swear, Law, if you are stalling or hoping I’ll forget, you’ll regret it.”

“Woman, I’m not doing either and don’t call me Law. My fucking name is Jake when we’re alone. You’ve got ten minutes to have your ass out in the living room and ready to go. I’ll get the kids ready.”

I heard her snort. I took that as her acknowledgment of my threat. I went to get the kids. I packed Dylan’s diaper bag in case he needed it after I changed his diaper. I made Daniel and Dena go to the bathroom. They were excited to go to the clubhouse. I was even more nervous than I was when I came home. There was more riding on this than I could possibly have imagined. I hoped it didn’t backfire. Maybe I should wait, but I couldn’t.

Exactly ten minutes later, Tonya joined us. I could tell her eyes were still slightly red and puffy. She’d put on some makeup to help cover it. She didn’t look happy. I took her hand. She tried to take it away, but I held on and gave her a stern look. She settled down and let me lead my family across the area between the guesthouse and the clubhouse. When we got inside, the place was filled with everyone. They were all talking and laughing. God, I hoped that rubbed off on Tonya. She looked like she was going to her execution.

Tonya: Chapter 14

What the hell had I been thinking when I accused Law of cheating on me? I knew he wouldn’t do that. Had I lost my mind or something? My emotions seemed to be all over the place. Maybe I was coming down sick or something. Lord, I hoped not because then the kids would get it. There was nothing worse than sick kids unless it was a sick man.

As we walked into the clubhouse and I saw all the people there, I wanted to grab him and take him back to the house to apologize for going insane. I could only imagine how much control it was taking for him not to lose his temper with me. I wouldn’t blame him. I guess the damage inflicted by Dan was still there. The things he said to me after I found out about his affair had gutted me and severely dented my self-worth as a woman.

I think his words hurt more than him actually cheating on me. If he hadn’t been so ugly, I might have been dumb enough to give him another chance. He guaranteed that would never happen after his hateful words to me. Those words were circling in my brain now as we entered the clubhouse. God, was Law going to publicly denounce me as his old lady and kick me out? Did the club do things like that? The nausea in my stomach started to bubble.

He took us to one of the open tables and pulled out a seat for me. I sat down feeling numb. I cuddled Dylan on my lap. Dena and Daniel saw the other kids and took off to play with them. As long as I could see them, I’d be alright. I was startled out of my thoughts when Soleil dropped into a chair beside me.

She leaned over to whisper in my ear. “You look like hell. What happened? Did you talk to him?”

“I did. He denied it, then laughed, and we fought. He said she wasn’t anyone, and we had to come here first then he’d clear it up. I think I fucked up, and he’s going to tell me he doesn’t want me anymore. I think I’m going to puke,” I whispered hoarsely, before I handed Dylan to her. I got up and raced to the hall bathroom. I barely made it before I was throwing up my guts.
