The door slamming open didn’t faze me. I was too gone in my misery to care who had come in and might be watching me lose my dinner. Suddenly, I felt hands holding back my hair. I took a quick peek and saw it was Law. He looked concerned, which only made me feel worse. I pushed at his leg.

“Go away, Jake. I don’t want you to see this. Go. I’ll be out once I’m done.”

“Like hell I’m leaving you like this. What’s wrong?”

“I must be coming down with something. I don’t want you or the kids to get it. Please, leave.”

“I’m not fucking leaving you like this, so forget it. Did this just come out of nowhere?”

I heaved again. When I was done, I nodded my head yes. He rubbed my back soothingly, which made tears well up in my eyes. I brushed them away. I couldn’t cry now. I was miserable, and I didn’t see it getting any better. He leaned down and placed his lips to my ear.

“Tell me this isn’t because of what we were talking about before we came here? Tell me that isn’t causing this?”

I wanted to tell him it wasn’t but I couldn’t. Instead of answering him, I threw up again, which kept me from being able to say anything.

“Fuck! I can’t believe this. Baby, please, don’t make yourself sick like this. I swear on everything I love that I didn’t cheat on you with Janine. If you can get this under control and come back out to the common room, you’ll see.”

I kneeled there for a good five minutes or more to make sure I wasn’t going to puke again. When my stomach felt better, I slowly stood up. My mouth tasted terrible.

“I need to rinse my mouth or brush my teeth. Let me go to the house.”

He shook his head as he opened the cabinet underneath the sink. He brought out a bottle of mouthwash and a plastic disposable cup.

“This shit happens around here. We keep this to be prepared. Here, swish this around in your mouth,” he said, as he poured some of it into the cup and handed it to me. It was better than nothing, so I took it. By the time I was refreshed, I was ready to get this over with. Whatever he had to show me or say needed to be done. I wanted to go home, crawl into bed, and pull the covers over my head.

With my head held high, I walked out with him on my heels. I went back to the table to sit with Soleil. She leveled me with a concerned look. Law bent down to say quietly, “Baby, I’ll be right back. Stay here, please.”

All I could do was nod. He walked off and Soleil started questioning me. “Did you just throw your guts up?”

“Yeah, I did.”

“Lord, Tonya, don’t let this affect you like last time. You didn’t eat or anything for weeks. You lost so much weight you scared me. Law doesn’t act like a man who doesn’t love you.”

“I know. I don’t know what to think. My head hurts.”

“Could you be sick for another reason, like you’re pregnant?”

I whipped my head around to stare at her in shock so fast, I got dizzy.

“No, it couldn’t! We’ve only been together a short while and I have an IUD, remember? You were with me when I got it.”

“So, they can fail, you know. And it only takes once to get pregnant. You could be. You should take a pregnancy test to be sure.”

“Shh, keep your voice down. Someone might hear you. I’m telling you it’s my nerves or I’m coming down with something. I’m not pregnant,” I hissed at her.

I was saved from her pestering me more, which I knew she wanted to do, by a loud whistle. The room quieted down right away. I realized Law had been the one to whistle. He was coming toward me with a determined look on his face. I felt like throwing up again, but I fought it down. I deserved whatever he was about to do or say. When he got to me, he stunned me by kneeling down. He grabbed my hand.

“Valkyrie, I know you’re hurt and confused and wondering what the hell I’ve been up to. I swear it wasn’t what you thought. I asked you to come here so I could show you that. The whole club is here to see it. I’ve told you that I love you and that you’re my old lady. The club voted on that. However, that wasn’t enough. You need something to show others that you’re taken. That’s why I got you this.” He pulled a bag out from underneath the table and lifted something out of it. It took a second for it to register that he was holding a leather cut. It was smaller than a man’s. He held it open.

“Will you please put this on?” he asked quietly. I automatically held out my arms to let him slip it on. As the leather settled around my shoulders and I ran my hand down the front, I saw the nameValkyriestitched on it. I knew on the back it would sayProperty of Law. I was beginning to tear up. Before I could say anything, he was tugging on my hand and bringing it closer to him.

“While that cut is the start, that’s not enough to tell others who you belong to. So, I wanted to know if you’d be willing to go further and wear this too. I think this says it all,” he said, right before he opened his hand and I saw it held a ring. It was a gorgeous diamond solitaire surrounded by smaller diamonds and sapphires. My mouth dropped open.

“Tonya, will you marry me?”

I was too choked up to say a word. How had I thought he would cheat on me? All I could do was nod my head and hold my hand out more. I heard several people laugh, as he slid the ring on my finger. It was a perfect fit which told me he’d found out my ring size somehow. He pushed my thighs apart and scooted between them. This brought us face-to-face.

“I love you. Janine is the lady who makes all the cuts for the club. I went to her house to get yours so I could give it to you tonight. You’re the only woman I want, now and forever. I’m sorry you had a moment’s doubt about that.”
