I burst into tears. He kissed my mouth softly, almost reverently, then stood. He spoke to Soleil, who was trying not to listen to us. The others were laughing and having a good time, thinking I was crying for another reason.

“Can you and Falcon watch the kids for an hour? I think Tonya and I need to talk about a few things.”

“Go do whatever you need to do. Take your time. We’ll take them to our house once we’re done here,” Falcon told him as he smiled at me. He’d walked over and joined us just in time to hear Law ask if they’d watch the kids. Next thing I knew, I was swept up into Law’s arms and he was walking out the door to the hollers and shouts of the club. I was scared. What would he have to say to my allegations in the privacy of the house? I deserved whatever it was.

He didn’t waste time when we got there. He took me straight to our room, shut and locked the door after lying me down on the bed. I waited. I watched as he took off his cut and boots. As soon as he had them off, he sat down on the bed. He stared hard into my eyes. I gulped.

“I want you to tell me what Dan said to you when you found out about his affair. The things you said earlier were all because of him. I need to know. Tell me everything.” His expression was deadly serious. He wouldn’t let me leave this room until I did.

“First, I have to apologize to you for what I said. I know that I overreacted and let my insecurities take over and make me doubt you, Jake. I’m sorrier than you know. I tried to tell myself I was being ridiculous, but a part of me refused to believe it. I guess I can’t figure out what you see in me.”

“Why not?”

“Come on, look at you. You’re gorgeous and could have anyone. Why waste your time on a divorcée who has three kids, barely makes ends meet and shows all the signs of being a mom? You could be with a perfect blonde who looks like a model and has no baggage.”

“Jesus Christ, you really believe that, don’t you? Tell me what he said. Now,” he ordered.

“After the club found out he was cheating and Soleil and Falcon told me, I didn’t confront him right away. At first, I didn’t believe it. However, about a week after they told me, he said he had to go out late to work on a problem he was having on his bike. He told me that he had no idea how late he’d be and said not to wait up for him. It just so happened that the kids were staying with Soleil. She wanted to give me a break, since I was pregnant again and had been working a lot. He kissed me and left.”

I paused and took a deep breath. Remembering still hurt. “I followed him. He wasn’t paying attention. I followed him to another area of Knoxville, on the opposite side of town from us. He stopped at a small house. He got out and went to the front door. It opened and out stepped a gorgeous blonde. She’s one of those who people stop and stare at. She wrapped her arms around him and he hugged her then they kissed. His hands were all over her. After they were done kissing, they went inside. I stayed there for two hours and he never came out. Finally, I went home.”

“God, baby, why did you torture yourself like that?”

“I was hoping I was delusional. Anyway, he didn’t come home until early morning. He didn’t think I noticed he’d showered before he did. He crawled into bed. I got up, using the excuse that I had to work. He went to sleep. I let him sleep. I called and asked Soleil to keep the kids until later. She agreed. She knew I was going to confront him. When he woke up, I was ready. I told him I knew about the affair and that I’d seen her. I cried and screamed at him, asking him why he did it. That’s when he let me know.”

“What did he say to try and justify that?” Law growled.

“He said it was my fault. That I was boring, and all I did was take care of the kids and work on my computer all night. He said I was fat and my body didn’t excite him anymore. He said he wanted someone who was exciting in bed and could meet all his desires. I wasn’t able to do that. He claimed that I had never been able to give him what he needed. He accused me of getting pregnant with the twins on purpose to trap him into marriage and then got pregnant again with Dylan because I knew he was cheating.”

Law came up off the bed swearing and kicked his boot clear across the room. His fists were clenched at his sides. He was breathing like he’d run a mile. “What else did that bastard say?”

“He claimed that even though he didn’t love me like he had, he didn’t want us to get a divorce. He said that it would be too much for me to raise three kids on my own, that I needed him and he wasn’t going to pay to support my ass. He said I’d just have to live with it. As soon as he was done spewing all that at me, he told me he’d be back later for dinner and he left.”

“Tell me you were gone when he came home.”

“I was. While he was gone, I packed as much of our stuff as I could and went to a hotel. Falcon offered to have us come here, but I didn’t want to do that. They brought the kids to me. The next morning, I went to a lawyer and had him start drawing up the divorce papers. Two days later, they were delivered to Dan. He called me so much after he found me gone, I had to silence my phone. Soleil and Falcon kept tabs on us and were great. He even called her demanding she tell him where I was. She told him to go fuck himself. Falcon threatened his life if he ever called Soleil again. They were the ones to help me find a small place for us. It wasn’t fancy but it was enough.”

“When did he find out where you were living and how did you get the rest of your stuff?”

“It was two months after I left him. I’m not sure how he found me. He tried repeatedly to get me to drop the divorce, but I told him no. I’d started answering the phone because of the kids. He tried begging and then threatening to take the kids away. I was scared, but there was no reason a judge would take them away from me. I wasn’t contesting anything, but he did, so it took six months to get the divorce finalized. It was the worst six months of my life. The judge almost didn’t grant it because I was pregnant, but Falcon got me a lawyer who knew his stuff. I got it a month before Dylan was born. We moved to the other side of Tennessee when Dylan was three months old. Dan wouldn’t give up even though we were no longer married. I have no idea why. You know the rest. I came back a few months ago because I missed Soleil and I was being hounded by Dan anyway.”

Law came back and stood in front of me. I couldn’t read the expression on his face. “Strip and lie on the bed on your back. I want your arms over your head and your legs spread,” he ordered.

I didn’t know what to do or say. I was in shock at his abrupt change in behavior. He couldn’t be serious about having sex right now. I didn’t move. He reached out and gripped my chin. He didn’t hurt me, but it was firm.

“I told you to strip. Who’s the boss in the bedroom, Valkyrie?”

“You are, but we’re not having sex right now, Jake.”

“What do you call me when you and I are in the bedroom?”

“S-Sir,” I stuttered.

“Exactly. You have two minutes to be naked and in position. If you’re not, I’m going to have to punish you.”

Not recognizing this Law and being a little scared as well as turned on, I did what he asked. I only hoped it didn’t end up being a mistake. What was he going to do to me? Was I about to be punished for thinking he’d cheated on me?
