I found it ironic that Kyle had been Nyssa’s physical therapist after she had been shot. He liked to tease that we lived a dangerous life and asked who else was planning to get shot just so they could work with him. Overall, when he wasn’t working me to the point of wanting to punch his face in, I liked him. However, he was relentless when pushing me to do my exercises. They hurt and when I tried to stop too soon, he would piss me off on purpose to make me continue.

That was what he’d done earlier today. Thankfully, I had to cut our time a tad short so I could get to my doctor appointment on time. It was with Dr. Harker. He was going to check me out and tell me what my new limits were. Law rode with me, with the standard escort, but he couldn’t stay. He had been called in to attend a mandatory meeting at the station. That’s why Soleil was with me. He didn’t want me in there alone.

Dr. Harker had finished examining my wound and checking out my range of motion. He’d questioned me extensively about my pain and what made it worse and what kind of things I had been doing that I shouldn’t. I could have lied but it was to my benefit not to.

“I knew you wouldn’t stick to those parameters for long or at all. It’s hard. However, I’m happy to see your wound has healed nicely. It still needs to be babied until it is considered fully healed, which is at least thirty days after surgery. You can gradually increase the weight you can lift, but only as directed by your PT. The swimming should be fine. Is there anything else you want to discuss?”

“I do. I’m wondering when I can resume having sex? I know you said my uterus needs time to heal before I try and get pregnant again. You didn’t say how long I had to abstain from sex.”

I was finding it harder and harder not to attack Law and demand that he make love to me. His brand of heavy foreplay was driving me mad with desire.

“As long as it doesn’t hurt, you can resume now. I take it the bleeding has stopped?” he asked. I nodded.

“Good. Now, as for contraception. Are you wanting to replace the IUD until you’re ready?”

“No, I don’t. I’ll discuss it with Law, but I believe it’s not worth putting one in. I’ll ask him to use condoms. I can’t tolerate the hormones in the shots or pills, not since I had my twins. They don’t know why. That’s why it’s either the IUD, spermicidal gel, or condoms. I’m leery of the gel, so condoms will have to do.”

“Good. Okay, then if that’s all, I bid you ladies a good day and good luck with your rehab. You can follow up at the six-week point with your regular doctor. I’ll send your notes over to him.”

“Thank you so much, Dr. Harker. Goodbye,” I told him. After he left the room, Soleil laughed.

“What’s so funny?”

“I just imagined the look on Law’s face when you strip naked and tell him to take you.”

“More like I’ll strip naked and jump on him. The man turns me into a hormonal mess and all I want to do is attack him. Don’t get me wrong, having him go down on me is really enjoyable, but it doesn’t compare to actual sex.”

“Oh, I know. After Lara was born and we couldn’t have sex, Falcon almost killed me. The only good thing is I did the same to him.”

This had us laughing all the way to the car, where our escorts were waiting. Our next stop would be to pick up Law at the police station. His mandatory meeting should be over. Lance drove us while Falcon rode his motorcycle. I’d tried to get Law to ride his, but he insisted he’d ride in the car with me. The man was still afraid that someone would try and hurt me again. I thought whoever it was would be crazy to attempt anything with any of the guys along. Hell, their grim faces were enough to scare people away, in my opinion.

We didn’t have long to wait at the station. I sent Law a text to let him know we were outside when he was done. He came out about ten minutes later. He didn’t look happy. When he got in, he gave me a kiss, but I could tell he was distracted. He was sitting in the back with me.

“Honey, what’s bothering you?”

“Sorry, the chief pissed me off. He said I can’t take any more time off. Thirty days are all he’s going to approve.”

“Law, you don’t need to take more. I’m getting better every day. I can do more. I have others at the compound who can help me if I need it or I’ll wait for you to get home.”

“I know that, but it still doesn’t feel right. I should be the one to help you out the most. You’re mine. I hate that they keep calling when I do work to pick up all those extra shifts. I used to do them, but that was before I had you and the kids. I don’t want to work like that all the time now. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stay home every day forever, but I don’t want this either.”

He fell silent. I could tell that Lance and Soleil had heard him although they didn’t say anything. We rode in silence toward home. I was lying against his shoulder, when I saw Falcon swerve in front of us. Then I saw a car bearing down on us. It looked like the one that had shot at me before. My heart sped up and panic started to rise. The pain of being shot flashed through my mind. That’s when I heard gunshots. We came to a screeching halt. Lance pulled off to the side of the road right behind Falcon, who came running back to us in a crouch. He hid behind the car.

“Stay here. Don’t open the doors. This vehicle is bulletproof,” Law said tersely before he dove out of the SUV. I screamed his name, but he didn’t stop. Soleil reached over the backseat and grabbed my arm.

“Stay. He knows what he’s doing. If you go out there, you’ll endanger them. Sit tight.”

Lance was busy on his phone. I had no idea who he was talking to. More shots rang out. I held my breath and prayed they wouldn’t hit the guys. The ping of a few hitting the SUV made me scream. I couldn’t help it. Lance finished his call and now he had his gun out.

Peering between the seats, I saw four men were outside of the other car. As I watched, I saw one then another go down. After a few more shots back and forth, they were all on the ground. I would’ve gotten out but Lance shook his head at me.

“We don’t know if they’re all dead or not. Stay here.”

He got out. A minute later, he, Law, and Falcon all cautiously approached the men. I could hardly breathe due to the terror that one of them might be playing dead. They made it to them and hunkered down. Guns were shoved away from the bodies. Suddenly, one of the downed men was jerked up off the ground. Law removed something from his pocket and put it around the man’s wrists. As he marched him toward us, I heard the roar of several bikes. I sagged in utter relief.

The next few moments were chaotic once the club arrived. They took over. I couldn’t wait a moment more and neither could Soleil. We both dove out of the SUV and ran over to our men. Law hugged me tightly as I cried and kissed him.

“Shh, Valkyrie, I’m alright. We’re all fine. It’s them you should worry about. Three are dead and the other one is wounded.”
