Matteo and the other guards drove like professionals, getting us to the trauma center in record time.

But by the time I ran into the Emergency room with Arianna in my arms, she was unconscious. “My wife has been poisoned,” I told the doctors waiting for us when we arrived. “She’s in anaphylactic shock, I’ve given her two rounds of Epi but she still can’t breathe. She’s pregnant.”

“Mr. Capasso,” one of the doctors tried to get my attention as medical professionals surrounded Arianna on the gurney, attaching monitors, starting IVs, and administering medications, “We’re going to take care of her, but you should leave while we do it.”

“No.” I pushed his hand off my arm, “Do what you have to do but I’m not going anywhere.”

“Sir, we need to intubate her.” He tried again. “It’s not pleasant to watch.”

I turned on him, and he backed up a step as I started screaming. “Somebody tried to kill my wife! I’m not leaving her side!”

“Yes, Sir.” He agreed finally, turning to his team and barking out orders.

I flattened my back against the wall at the end of her bed and watched every single thing they did to her. It felt like hours passed as they tried different things to counteract the reaction going on inside of her body, poking her and stabbing her with medications over and over again. The monitor on the wall showed her heart was beating, but I wasn’t dumb enough to think that meant she was okay.

“Save her,” I croaked through my dry throat when I felt like I couldn’t take another second of it. “Please, no matter what. You have to save her.”

No one in the room acknowledged me, save for the head doctor I screamed at when we came in. And even he only looked at me over her frail body and sighed.

Someone tried to kill my wife.

And as I watched that bump on the monitor go up and down with each beat of her heart, I vowed to decimate anyone involved.

“Capa,”Avoicecalledfrom the doorway of Arianna’s dark hospital room hours later. She had been moved up to the ICU after the medication combination the doctors finally found worked to reverse the swelling in her body.

But she was still intubated and sedated, so her body could continue to recover. The doctors said they ran her blood and found no traces of epinephrine in her system when she first came in. I injected her twice with her pens, but none of us could figure out why it hadn’t shown up in her bloodstream twenty minutes later.

I hated not having answers to simple questions. It left me feeling useless and dejected.

I looked at the doorway and saw both of my brothers-in-law waiting behind Matteo in the hallway.

No one came into the room without permission, hospital staff included. Dr. Travis personally vetted the elite staff allowed in with the Chief of Staff before anyone touched her after she left the ER.

“Let them in,” I said tiredly, tightening my hand around Arianna’s from my seat next to her bed.

Carmine and Cristian walked in silently with looks of horror on their faces as they stared at their little sister laying in a hospital bed, still barely clinging to life.

“Will she be okay?” Carmine asked quietly as he took a seat on the other side of her, picking up her hand in his.

“She should recover,” I responded, looking back down at my wife.

“And the baby?” Cristian asked from where he stood at the foot of the bed.

“Holding on through it all,” I sighed, “Fucking miracle if you ask me.”

“Ari’s strong.” Carmine watched me closely as I finally paid either of them any attention. “Doesn’t surprise me that her babe is too.”

Cristian pulled a chair up next to his brother and rested a hand on Ari’s calf. “Do you know how it happened yet?” The cuts on his face were bandaged together and the swelling was far less than it had been, but he still looked like shit.

I shook my head solemnly, “I will before the sun rises in the sky. Even if I have to do it myself.”

“I think our father was behind it,” Carmine admitted. “I have no proof, but it makes the most sense.”

“Agreed.”

“I moved Anita and Amelia to a safe house.” He sighed, “I can’t risk him wiping us all off the face of the earth.”

“What about you two?” I nodded to them. “You’d seem like bigger targets than your little sisters.”
