Chapter thirty-six

Luke’sblonde-brownhairwasraked back, his jaw freshly shaved, and he’d paired an old Chargers tee with some worn blue jeans and slides.

Damn, he looked good standing there in her doorway.

By the appreciative way his gaze lingered over her new pants, Andy was fairly certain he was thinking the same thing.

They were skinny jeans, her new pants. She’d picked them up at Suni’s last Friday after her day shift. Normally, Andy hated the scratchy feel of denim, but this fabric was wonderfully soft and stretchy, and although they had crap in the way of pockets, the pants looked really flattering with her white scoop-neck tank top.

Which was probably getting a nice dusting of fur since Birdie was rubbing her head all up against it. But whatever.

“You’re late.” That was the first thing Andy said to her boyfriend after missing him so much for the past two days. That and, “You were supposed to be here yesterday morning.”

Luke cracked a smile at her pissiness. “I had a few things to pick up.” Andy bit back a grin of her own as his long arms were laden with bags. Kicking the door shut behind him, Luke set his haul on the coffee table, strode right back over to the door and locked it, then he turned to her. “Forgive me.”

She nodded, eyes suddenly swimming with tears. “Forgive me too.”

“Nothing to forgive.” Jaw tightening and eyes glistening, he closed in on her. “Can I touch you now?”

“Please touch me now.”

His hand cupped her cheek. Andy nuzzled the warmth of it like the kitten bunting her shirt.

“Can I kiss you now?”

“Please kiss me now.”

“So damn sweet,” he murmured before leaning down to press his lips to hers.

They were warm, Luke’s lips. Soft and warm, yet strong and cool at the same time. Minty-fresh lips. As though he’d just popped a breath mint. Andy licked over them, wanting to explore that hot-cold dichotomy more in depth.

Luke opened for her with a husky growl, one arm shooting about her waist to lift her up, so he could give her exactly what she was after.

The kitten squalled and squirmed between them.

Andy pushed her boyfriend away. “Oh no, Birdie. We’re crushing you.” She dropped an apologetic kiss on the kitten’s head.

Heavens, she was soft. Andy kissed her again. And again.

Luke chuffed out a laugh. “Damn, cock-blocked by a cat. Gotta admit that’s a first for me.”

Andy covered one furry ear with her hand. “Excuse him, Birdie. He has a very naughty mouth.”

“You like my naughty mouth.”

So true. It was pretty high up on her list of likes.

Andy turned her attention to the bags on the coffee table. It appeared Luke had raided the nearest pet store because they were crammed full of cat supplies.

Tugging a plush pink pillow bed from one of the bags, she carried it to her room. Luke followed her in and watched as she set up a little spot for Birdie near the desk. “There you go.” Andy knelt beside the oval cushion to lay her squirmy bundle down. “You’ve had a very trying morning, Birdie. It’s time for you to rest.”

Birdie circled a few times before plopping down on the Tweety with a tired mewl.

Andy just stared at her, hardly able to believe this precious little creature was hers. “How did you know?” she whispered to the man kneeling beside her. “How did you know she was exactly what I needed?”

“I didn’t,” Luke said. “But I did hope for it.” Stroking Birdie, who was purring softly, he met Andy’s gaze. “I’d hoped she’d make you smile just like that.”

Instinctively, Andy’s hand rose to cover her big goofy grin.
