That was it.

After a moment of quiet, Kory softly cleared her throat. “Welp, I for one am totally jealous. I’d love to get the whole summer off to spend with Gray.”

Andy glanced over to see her roommate fidgeting with the little gold hummingbird pendant hanging in the V of her blouse. Kory’s boyfriend had given her the necklace right before she’d moved to San Diego for an internship with a comic book publisher in the city. Kory had told Andy it represented a promise they’d made to each other. A promise that despite all the miles between them — with Gray working and going to school in their hometown of Sacramento while Kory was doing the same in San Diego — they would make their relationship work.

Andy admired their devotion to each other.

She also envied it.

Kory and Gray were like Lois and Clark. The kind of perfect storybook couple that would love each other forever and ever. And when they eventually married — which they’d do only once — it would be for a lifetime.

Someone sighed.

Maybe it was Kory.

Maybe it was her.

No, it must have been Kory because Davis let slip a soft maternal cluck followed by, “Oh, honey, I know you miss him.”

Kory waved off the sympathy. “Don’t mind me. I’m just feeling moody because our schedules have been so out of sync lately. But, hey, at least Gray and I were able to book a week off for Yosemite.”

“That’s great! Yosemite is always fun! When are you going?”

“In July.”

“Oh.” There was a familiar note of concern underlying the syllable before Davis recovered with a little too much enthusiasm. “Well then, it sounds like Andy and Petals will have the apartment to themselves for a spell.” She gestured towards the nook. “Hopefully, these two party animals don’t burn the place down.”

The tiny Andy in Petals’s eyeball was looking more irritated by the second.

Burn the place down…

As if. Andy was always careful around fire. It was her old friend PJ who was a bit of a pyro.

“Maybe you could just keep an eye on them the rest of the time we’ll be gone,” Davis tacked on quickly.

Geez. Could the woman be any more of a helicopter mom?

Kory snorted as she rose from her chair. The familiar sound drew Andy’s gaze.

Reading people, especially new people, had always been rather difficult for Andy. Still, after living with Kory for so long, Andy could easily discern what her expression was saying right now. Which was something along the lines of:

Your mom knows I’m a year younger than you, right? She knows I’m working two jobs and going to school, right? She knows I’m basically never here, and when I am, I’m usually holed up in my room either doing homework or sexting my boyfriend, right?

Andy just shook her head.

“I’ll do my best,” Kory said dryly as she slung her purse over the shoulder of a Barbie-pink blouse tucked into a black A-line skirt. “Now, I better be off. I’ve got the early-bird shift over at Rockabilly’s.”

“Of course.” Davis rose, and the two shared a quick embrace.

“Have a safe flight, Mrs. W.”

“We will. Speaking of, on your way out, can you please tell my husband that we’re in danger of missing that flight if he doesn’t wrap up his call soon?”

“No problem.”

Kory headed for the door but stopped, long black ponytail swishing as she turned back to Andy. “Want me to bring some of that triple-chocolate cake home after my shift?”

Andy liked triple-chocolate cake. A lot.
