“I’ll pick up more milk.”

Kory smiled. “Cool. Later, chick.”

“Later.”

As her roommate took off, Andy turned towards the window in the nook. It was still dark out. But not so dark that she couldn’t make out her parents’ driver rearranging luggage in the back of a Mercedes SUV. Or her father pacing along the sidewalk in front of it with a phone pressed to his ear.

“I swear if he thinks he’ll get away with bringing business on this trip, he’s got another thing coming.” Davis plopped down in the seat opposite Andy. “Iwilldrop that phone off the Eiffel Tower if I have to.”

“Did you know the Eiffel Tower is approximately the same height as an eighty-one-story building?” Andy said, remembering a stat she’d read in some coffee table book.

“You’re right. I’d probably kill a tourist. The phone stays with me.”

“Good call.”

They shared a grin before her mother exhaled a sigh for the man pacing outside.

Andy’s father owned ManCave Outfitters, a popular retail chain with stores nationwide. Andy had worked at the one closest to her apartment since the summer before starting junior college, and while she’d put in her fair share of hours with the family business, it was nothing compared to what her father had put in over the years. Much to the detriment of his marriage. His first one anyway.

“So,” Davis said, drumming the table as she turned back to Andy. “You do have the contact information for where we’ll be staying, right?”

“Yes, Mom.”

“And you’ll call us if you need anything?”

“Yes, Mom.”

“And you’ll remember to take your vitamins while we’re gone—”

“Mom!”

With a startled chirp, Petals flapped over to the kitchen island.

Davis’s shoulders rose defensively. “What? You know how you get backed up if you don’t take your vitamins and your Metamucil.”

Andy narrowed her eyes at the clock over the stove. “Shouldn’t you be leaving?”

“Andy,”her mother said in an exasperated tone.

“Mom,”she parroted back.

There was a beat of silence before Andy pressed her tongue to the roof of her mouth, rounded her lips, and mimicked the sound of a helicopter propeller spinning.

Her mother seemed to get the message. “Wise-ass,” she muttered just as Andy’s father walked into the apartment.

Striding over to the nook, he settled a hand on Davis’s back as she lifted her lips to his.

Andy grimaced as the kiss deepened into something that was far too much for her to deal with at — she glanced at the stove again — 5:22 in the morning.

Her father ended the PDA with a rare smirk that transformed his usual stern countenance into something almost boyish. “Looks like someone else is in a hurry for us to take off. Plans this morning, Andalise?”

Actually, she did have plans.

As soon as her parents left, she was going to hop on her bike and ride over to the same place she’d been visiting every morning for the past three weeks.

She was going to her secret place.

To seehim.
