Andy giggled hysterically the whole ride in, more salty water splashing into her mouth. But she didn’t care. This feeling was wonderful. Why had she never done this as a kid?

Probably because she’d never made it past the sand.

What a wonderful pleasure to have deprived herself of.

“Again,” she announced as they hit sand a second time.

“Oh yeah,” Luke said as they trudged back out. “You are definitely meant to ride waves. Just wait until you’re standing on one. Harnessing all that power as you rip down the line of a sweet-ass curl.”

Andy suspected he might be right. Because for the first time since Luke had informed her he was teaching her to surf, she was actually really eager to learn. That little spark of excitement she’d been feeling since putting on the suit the other day was now a full-on bonfire.

She wanted to surf.

Right now.

The feeling gripped her just as the tide did. Instinctively, Andy pushed up on her board and tried to get a foot under herself to stand. She’d seen the guys do this pop up thing plenty of times, making it look so damn easy.

News flash: it was not.

As soon as her knee slid up the board, she lost her balance and tipped over, splashing into the waves on a scream.

Which was not good because then she inhaled a massive gulp of water. She hopped up just in time for another foamy swell to smack into her back and send her tumbling to her knees again. Coughing and spluttering, she rose on wobbly legs.

Luke jog-splashed over to her side and got an arm under hers. “Damn, Bird, points for trying. That was fucking rad. But try not to inhale the ocean while you’re doing it, okay?”

She could only nod as he guided her the rest of the way in on foot. By the time they reached the crunchy sand at the shore and unstrapped their boards, Andy’s stomach was starting to feel really upset.

“That’s it. I’m calling it,” Luke said, taking a board under each arm. “You don’t look so hot.”

“I’m just hungry.”

“We can go back to my place. I’ve got food. And an extra shower if you wanna clean up.”

The offer sent a frisson of nervous energy straight to her agitated belly. Andy definitely wanted to get cleaned up. But at Luke’s condo?

Did a man and a woman — platonic friends and coworkers, who were also in a temporary teacher-student relationship — take showers at each other’s places?

Did it matter?

As the stomach acids continued to churn in her gut and her sensory triggers fired up, Andy decided it did not. Frowning at the sand accumulating about her toes with every step, she offered Luke a quick nod of assent.

Catching the direction of her gaze, he sighed. “Okay, forget everything I said about looking like a kook. You should get some booties.”

“They’ll help?”

“Yep. With the coldandthe sand.” He studied her feet as they stopped near her backpack and the Tweety. “What are you… a size fiv—”

“Yo!”

They both looked up to see a small group approaching.

A small group led by Kyle Taylor-Vaughn.

Oh god, no. She wasn’t ready for him at the moment. Not with club toes, her stomach acting up, and her hair falling about her shoulders in stringy wet clumps. Andy stepped back, hiding behind Luke as Kyle tagged his outstretched hand.

“Damn, MacCallum, you made it out here before me?”

“I know. Wonders never cease, bro.” Luke’s gaze shifted to the two women who’d stopped beside Kyle, and there was a teasing quality to his voice when he said, “Late night?”
