The taller of the two — a choppy-haired chick with long, tan limbs on full display in a pair of raggedy cutoffs — shot Luke the bird. “You know I don’t swing that way, baby.”

“That’s fucked up for about fifty percent of the population, Val.”

Val winked at him. “Don’t I know it.”

As Andy cast a curious glance around Luke, she noted the other woman — the woman practically glued to Kyle’s side — looked like she very much swung his way. Clad in the tiniest pair of black denim shorts Andy had ever seen and a bikini top that was all strings and hot pink hotness, this brunette was gorgeous.

She fluttered her lashes in a way Andy had not yet mastered. “Hey, Lucky.”

Lucky?Who the hell was Lucky?

“Hey, Ski.” Luke tipped his chin.

Guess he was Andy’s surf instructor. Inching out of her hiding spot, she narrowed her eyes as she checked out the dynamics between the two.

“So what brings you out here this fine morning?” Luke drawled.

Tapping the black cherry logo on the Lycra triangle covering her left breast, Ski giggled. “Company business.”

Andy frowned. Partially because the chick’s perfume was way too much for a day at the beach, and partially because she felt like she might vomit in her mouth.

For real this time.

“Yo, dude, we’re here to set up a booth,” Kyle told Luke. “The Sin Spot’s sponsoring a summer kickoff event. We’ll be selling margaritas and pulled-pork sliders. You hanging out?”

Luke glanced back at her, his bright expression dimming as he noted her hiding behind him. “Nah. We were just finishing up.”

At this, Kyle spotted her. “Oh, hey! Andy from the shop! Good to see you again. Out catching some waves?”

Luke stepped to her side. “This one just had her second lesson.”

“Oh yeah?” Kyle shifted closer, with Ski still attached to his hip. “How was it?”

A cloud of sugary-sweet fragrance assaulted Andy’s senses, and that was the last straw for her rolling stomach. Pitching forward, she got a real good look at Kyle’s perfectly handsome feet right before she retched and hosed them down with seawater and shredded wheat.

Chapter fifteen

Lukeditchedthesurfboardsand bent to gather the wet locks hanging around Andy’s face, fisting them at her crown as she upended the contents of her stomach on Kyle’s sandals.

“My new shoes!”

This was from Ski, not Kyle. The woman wore bubblegum pink Gucci slides, and it appeared some of Andy’s breakfast had spewed their way.

“Oh no! Will it stain?”

Jesus. Why had he banged this chick in college?

Probably for the same reason Kyle had. Because Skyler Horner was hot. The sharpest tool in the shed, on the other hand, she definitely was not. And it didn’t appear she’d grown any more intelligent since graduating.

“Oh, my sweet girl,” Val drawled beside her, “I think your rubber shoes will survive.” Valerie Dilucca — also a former lover of Ski’s — looped an arm through hers affectionately. “Why don’t we go wash them off?”

Ski brightened as Val tugged her towards the shore, but then paused to offer Andy a mint from the canvas tote slung over her shoulder. As ditzy and vain as the woman could be, she wasn’t completely self-absorbed.

Andy — still frozen in her bent-over state — declined the offer with a distressed whimper.

Kyle, meanwhile — who hadn’t so much as flinched at the mess on his toes — laid a gentle hand on her back. “Whoa, there. You okay?”

She tensed.
