“Together?” Jenni repeated, and I nodded, risking a glance at Harper.

But she was still. Her expression was a mask of hurt and confusion.

“So let me get this straight,” Jenni turned her attention to my girlfriend. At least, I really fucking hoped she was still my girl after this shit show. “All this time, you were giving me advice on how to tell Mason that I wanted more, and you were—”

“I didn’t know your secret guy was Mason.” Harper paled. “You never told me that. I am so sorry.”

“Natalie was right about you,” Jenni sneered. “You are a desperate whore.”

“N-Natalie?” Harper choked out. “You two—”

“We have mutual friends, yeah. She’s told me all about your revolving door of guys. But I like to make up my own opinion of someone before I cast judgment.”

“Revolving door? What are you talking about? That’s not… She said that? Natalie said that?” Jenni nodded with disgust, and Harper flinched. “And now you think I’m a… a whore?” Her voice shook with hurt.

“If the cap fits.” Jenni folded her arms over her chest and scowled at Harper.

“Yeah. No,” I snapped. “If you think I’m just going to sit here while you attack Harper, you can leave. If you should be blaming anyone, it’s me. I went after her knowing you and I were involved.”

Harper sucked in a sharp breath, and I instantly regretted my choice of words. But this clusterfuck was the last thing I was expecting when I turned up here. And I wasn’t good at… at this.

“Harper, that’s not… we hooked up occasionally. Past tense.”

“Great.” Jenni shot up. “That’s really great. I came here today to lay my cards out on the table, to tell you that I wanted more, and you came to tell me that you’re seeing her? You two are welcome to each other,” she threw her hands up, “I’m done. I’m so freaking done.”

Jenni stormed out of the place, but the tension remained.

“Harper, I—”

“Don’t,” she said on a shaky breath. “All this time, and I never imagined she was talking about you.”

“I don’t know how the fuck this happened.” I dragged a hand through my hair. “I came here to tell her it was done. Over. Not that we even had anything. It was just sex. The occasional hook-up. I swear, that’s all it was.”

“Not to Janelle. Jenni.” She shook her head. “Whatever the hell her name is. Why didn’t you tell me about her?”

“Because in my head, there was nothing to tell. I didn’t make any promises to her. We weren’t exclusive. We were friends—”

“With benefits.” Her expression faltered. “Is that all I am to you?”

“The fuck?” I jerked back, shocked she would even ask that. “No, and you know it.”

“Do I? What’s to stop you from doing exactly the same thing to me?”

“Because I… I care about you. Come on, Harper. This is getting blown way out of proportion.”

“Was that who you were texting this morning?”

Shit.

“I… yeah. But she texted me. I swear, I never—”

“I need to go.”

“What? Why?” I grabbed her hand. She couldn’t leave. Not without hashing this out. “We need to talk about this. I don’t want Jenni, Harper. I want you. I was here for you.”

“I… I can’t do this right now. I need some time to think.”

“You need time…” I scoffed. “Yeah, whatever. You know, this is exactly why I don’t do relationships. Too much fucking drama.”
