She flinched at my cruel words, but I was pissed. Pissed she wouldn’t hear me out. Pissed Jenni had spewed all that shit about Harper being a whore.

Pissed that I was now imagining her—my fucking girlfriend—with a line of other guys.

“I’m glad to know where you stand on things.” She gave me a sad, defeated smile before walking away from me without so much as a second look.

CHAPTER28

HARPER

Mason wasJanelle’s fuck buddy.

It would have almost been funny if it didn’t hurt so much.

Walking into that bar and seeing them sitting there had only reinforced every doubt and insecurity I’d ever had about myself.

They had been together. More than a few times if Janelle’s account had been true.

Mason and Janelle.

Is that the kind of girl he typically went for? Smart. Quiet. Kept to herself.

Discreet.

She hadn’t blabbed to us that she was seeing a Laker. Hadn’t even hinted at it.

I didn’t expect Mason to be a saint. He was a hockey player, for Christ’s sake. Sex was par for the course. And I wasn’t exactly the Virgin Mary either. It wasn’t even about the sex, not really. It was knowing he had someone he turned to. All this time, I thought we were developing this connection, that I was special.

That I was his exception to the rule.

And now I just felt stupid and insignificant.

I didn’t go back to my dorm. I couldn’t. Not after she dropped the Natalie-bomb. So I’d asked Rory to take me back to her place.

“I’m sorry I ruined our plans,” I said, another wave of embarrassment rolling through me at the fact that she, Ella, Jordan, and her girlfriend Noelle had witnessed everything.

“You have nothing to apologize for. Come on,” she said, unlocking her apartment. “Let’s see what Harper-friendly comfort food I can find.”

“Thank you.” I followed her inside.

“You know, and this is just my unsolicited opinion; maybe you should have stuck around to hear him out.”

“I was just so embarrassed, Rory. Not to mention hurt. We spent this amazing night together. He dropped the G-word, and then I discover he’s secretly breaking things off with his fuck buddy, hoping I won’t find out. It doesn’t exactly make me feel like a priority.”

“You’re right, and I get it. I do. But it’s Mason we’re talking about. He’s… not like the other guys.”

“What do you mean?”

“He carries a lot on his shoulders. He isn’t used to considering anyone else’s feelings. He probably thought he was doing you a favor by not telling you about Janelle.”

“Well, that’s just stupid.”

“Have you had the talk?” She gave me a pointed look.

“The talk?”

“Yeah, the ex-talk. The body count talk?”

“No. I’m not sure I ever want to have that talk.”
