“Nothing for you to worry your pretty little head about, Rory, baby. Where’s that gorgeous girlfriend of mine?”

“She and Dayna went to the restroom.”

“What is it with girls peeing in pairs?” Noah asked.

“It’s one of life’s little mysteries.” Rory gazed up at him like he hung the fucking moon. “What were you all talking about before I came over?”

“Nothing.”

“Girls, then.” Her brow went up, a knowing twinkle in her eye.

“Try girl, singular.”

“And do I know this girl?”

“No,” I said right as Connor drawled, “You’re acquainted.”

“Let me guess. Harper?” She pinned me with a narrowed look.

“Not doing this,” I murmured, turning my attention back to the flatscreen while Connor’s deep laugh filled the space around us.

Once he got something in his mind, the guy was worse than a dog with a bone. I think I liked him more before he persuaded Ella to give him a second chance. He’d been level-headed back then. Sturdy. Dependable. The sensible one, we’d called him.

Now he was jacked up on love juice calling everyone baby and trying to interfere in things he had no business interfering in.

Mainly other players’ love lives.

My lips twitched. As annoying as he was, it was fucking impossible to dislike the guy. Connor Morgan was a goofball, but he was still one of the best damn guys I knew, on and off the ice.

“Something funny, Steele?” he asked, and I shook my head, keeping my gaze trained on the flatscreen.

“Nothing. Nothing at all. We heading to Zest or what?”

I needed to get out of here.

I didn’t like the way Harper looked at me as if I was a nut to crack or a puzzle to solve.

I’d made it crystal clear the other night that I had zero interest in getting to know her better.

Because I didn’t.

Even if her old man was a Lakers legend.

“We ready to get out of here?” I asked, downing the remnants of my drink.

“Already?” Rory pouted.

“We don’t have to—”

“Yeah, Holden, we do. You guys promised me a night out,” I pointed out. “I’m cashing in.”

“Fine. Let me go say goodbye to Harper.” She leaned up and kissed Noah’s cheek before hurrying to find her friend.

“What?” I barked, noticing Noah watching me, a knowing glint I didn’t like in his eye.

“Nothing, man. Nothing at all.” He grinned.

“Whatever,” I mumbled. “I’ll wait outside.”
