I needed to call my mom and check in on Scottie.

Leaving the bar, I dug my cell out of my pocket and rang Mom.

“Hey, sweetheart,” she answered. “How’s your night?”

“Good, Mom. How is he?”

“We had a better day, although he’s still upset we didn’t make it to your game last night.”

“Is he up? Let me speak to him.”

“I don’t know, Mason, I don’t—”

“Mom, come on. It’s me. Put him on.”

There was a long pause then I heard her say, “Scottie, sweetheart, your brother is on the phone. Would you like to speak with him?”

“Mase? Mason?” My brother’s voice filled the line.

“Hey buddy, how’s it going?”

“I had to go to the store with Mom. You know I hate going to the store. It’s too loud, and it smells funny.” He made a fake-retching sound.

“Did you wear your ear defenders?”

“Mm-hmm, the ones with the Lakers logo.

“Atta boy. Listen, buddy. I’m not going to make it home tomorrow—”

“No. No, no, no, you promised. Mason brother promised me.”

“I know, and I’m sorry, okay? I’ll make it up to you. But Coach needs me for something tomorrow. And you know I can’t say no to Coach Tucker.”

“Coach Tucker needs you?”

I knew that would get his attention.

“Sure does.”

“Maybe he wants you to be captain.”

“Pretty sure that’s not it,” I chuckled. Damn this kid. “We have a captain.”

“Yeah, number nineteen, Aiden Dumfries. Recruited from Monroe High School, Michigan. Most goals scored in a game, he has one of the—”

“Scottie?” I said firmly, trying to break through his hyper-focused thoughts.

“Yeah, Mase?”

“Do you understand what I’m saying? I won’t be home tomorrow, but—”

“You’ll make it up to me.”

“That’s right, kid.”

“When?”

I smiled. Scottie liked to know everything. When? How? Why? His brain needed order. It needed things laid out for him.
