Mason kissed the end of my nose. “Jenni was way off base saying all that shit to you. Who the fuck is Natalie anyway?”

“She lives in my dorm. She’s had it out for me since I moved in.”

“Yeah, that’s not going to fly with me. I’ll talk to her.”

“No, Mason. I would never ask you—”

“You’re not asking me. I’m telling you. If she says another bad word about you, she’s done.”

“You’re a little bit scary when you’re pissed.”

“I’m not pissed, Harper. Well, I am. But that’s not the half of it. Watching you walk out of that bar fucking terrified me. I thought I’d lost you. I thought—”

“I’m sorry.” I leaned up, laying my palm on his cheek. “I panicked. I guess I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

“What do you mean?”

“This. Us. I still can’t quite believe it’s real.”

“It’s real, Harper.” Mason looped his arms around my waist, holding me tight. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about Jenni.”

“I’m sorry I ran.”

“See.” His mouth twitched. “That wasn’t so hard, was it?” He kissed me soft and slow, letting his tongue slide lazily against mine.

“Mason,” I whimpered.

“Don’t leave me again, blondie. I need you, okay? I really fucking need you.”

“Uh, guys,” a little voice called, and I glanced over my shoulder to find Rory peeking around the door. “Not that I’m not happy for you both, because I am. Yay.” She smiled. “But can you maybe move this inside? I love this building and don’t want to be evicted because my friends are getting freaky in the hallway.”

“Rory, we’re not getting freaky,” I laughed, burying my face in Mason’s chest because everything that had happened at the bar seemed so silly in the face of this. The fact he’d chased me down to set things straight.

“Yet,” he rasped in my ear, sending a shiver through me.

“Put the girl down, Steele, and get inside,” Rory ordered. “Noah is on his way over with supplies?”

“Supplies?” I asked.

“Yeah. Apparently, he wants to, and I quote, ‘celebrate another Laker switching to the dark side.’”

“Asshole,” Mason muttered, ushering me into Rory’s apartment.

“Do you two need a minute?” she asked. “I can go hide in my room and put on some loud music.”

“I think we can keep our hands to ourselves.” I fought a smile.

“Speak for yourself.” Mason wrapped his arms around me from behind, dropping his chin to my shoulder. “I’m desperate to be inside you,” he whispered.

But not quiet enough, apparently because Rory turned bright red and stuttered, “And that’s my cue to disappear.”

“No, wait,” I called after her. “He’s joking. It’s a joke.”

“Pretty sure I’m not joking, blondie.” Mason kissed my neck.

“Behave!” I scolded. “Noah is coming over.”

“So? I’ve spent weeks watching him and Rory dry-humping at every turn. Payback is a bitch.”
