“Yeah, I told Noah I didn’t either. I don’t need to know his entire sexual history. Do you know why? Because it doesn’t matter to me. I love him. All parts of him. Even the ones I wish were a little less active.”

“I gave her dating advice, Rory. I was basically telling her how to get the guy. My guy.”

Her mouth tipped with mild amusement. “But you didn’t know it was Mason. That isn’t your fault.”

“No, it’s his.”

“Harper, come on, this isn’t a reason to throw away what you guys have.”

I’d told her everything on the walk here. She knew how I felt about him, that I was falling hard and fast for number thirteen.

“I don’t want to throw it away. I just want—”

A loud bang on Rory’s door startled me. “Rory, what did you do?” I hissed.

“Nothing, I didn’t… Fine, I told Noah we were coming here.”

“Aurora!”

“What? I didn’t think he’d go tattling to Mason.”

“Harper, open up. I know you’re in there.”

Another bang.

Another hammer to my heart.

“Don’t worry. I’ll deal with this.” Rory went to the door and cracked it open an inch. “You need to leave; she isn’t ready—”

“Not going to happen,” Mason said. I couldn’t see him, but I could feel him—his desperation.

Rory was right. Things had gotten blown way out of proportion. But I was hurt. I needed time to lick my wounds and figure out what—

“Come on, blondie. I know you’re in there,” he called. “I’m not leaving until you see me.”

“Mason, this isn’t—”

“It’s okay,” I said, approaching Rory. “I’ll talk to him.”

“You’re sure?”

I nodded, switching places with her. “What do you want, Mason?”

His eyes were an arctic storm, freezing me from the inside out. “We’re not doing this.”

“What?”

“We’re not letting some insignificant bullshit get in the way of this.”

“I’d hardly call the fact you’ve been seeing Janelle—”

“How many times do I have to say it? I wasn’t seeing her. It wasn’t like that. And I didn’t tell you because it didn’t come up. Because whenever I’m with you, the only thing I’m thinking about is how much I want to kiss you.

“It’s you, Harper. It’s only ever been you. Did I handle the Jenni stuff wrong? Yeah. But I’ve never done this. I’m going to mess up, babe. I’m going to get it wrong. But talk to me. Hear me out. Don’t fucking run from me just because you’re pissed or hurt or embarrassed.”

“I just feel so stupid, Mason.”

His hand snapped out, grabbing my sweater, and he tugged me forward. “You’re not stupid. You’re fucking perfect.” He gazed down at me. “Perfect for me. And you’re all I want.”
