“If it is, I’ll deal with it.”

I’d made my choice—it was her.

The rest would figure itself out. But I did need to talk to Coach sooner rather than later.

I pulled on my jersey and took off barefooted toward Coach’s office. Knocking twice, I waited.

“Come in,” he called.

“What’s up, Coach?”

“Take a seat, son.” He motioned to the empty chair. “I’ll get straight to it. Did you know Coach Dixon had invited a couple of scouts down to come watch you play?”

“He mentioned it. Why?”

Coach Tucker ran a hand down his face, his expression pensive. “I got a call from the Blue Jackets yesterday to confirm a meeting.”

“You didn’t know.” I deduced.

“No, I didn’t. I knew James had taken you under his wing, and I’ll be honest, Mason, he made a good case, given how well you’ve been playing. But something’s going on with him, and I can’t quite figure out what. I still haven’t talked to him yet, but he isn’t coming in today again. Texted me this morning.”

Shit.

I tapped my foot on the floor, tension radiating inside me. I needed to air my concerns. Tell him what I knew. But it meant breaking Harper’s confidence. Something that didn’t sit well with me. Not after yesterday.

Not after I’d finally made her mine.

“Mason… tell me where your head’s at, son.”

“There was an incident,” I said.

“I’m listening.”

“Friday night, after the game. A few of us hit TPB. Coach D showed up.”

“He came to the bar?”

I nodded.

“What happened?”

“He said he wanted to follow up on our conversation about the scouts.”

“Did he have anything to drink?”

“One drink. Whiskey, I think. He did buy me and two of the other guys a drink, though.”

“Jesus,” Coach blew out a steady breath. “You didn’t think to come to me with this sooner?”

“I’ll be honest, Coach. The entire thing made me feel uncomfortable, but I figured that everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt.”

“We have rules about this kind of thing for a reason.”

“I know,” I said. “I didn’t want to cause unnecessary drama. It was one drink, and he didn’t hang around.”

“Anything else I should know before I decide how to deal with this?”

It was now or never.
