“What? Why?” Rory frowned. “We just got here.”

“And now we’re going over there.” Noah ushered her toward the counter, and I grimaced.

“Mase?”

“So your old man was a no-show again.”

“I thought he might be.”

“I talked to Coach Tucker…”

“You told him?” She searched my eyes, and I nodded.

“I had to. I should have told him about TPB anyway. So when he asked, I couldn’t lie.”

“Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Yeah, okay.” Harper slid her arms around my neck and lowered her face to mine. “I don’t owe my father anything, Mason. And honestly, if he is drinking again, I don’t think he should be around you or the team.”

My brows crinkled as her words sank into me.

She meant it, every word. Because that’s who Harper was. Selfless and supportive, she genuinely cared about the team and me.

Jesus, I’d been so fucking wrong about her.

“I’m just sorry he made you promises he’ll probably never keep.”

“Fuck, Harper,” I breathed, closing the distance between us to graze my mouth over hers. “What did I ever do to deserve you?”

“I ask myself that same question every day.” She smirked, kissing me once. Twice. Sliding her hand over my jaw and teasing me with her tongue.

“Careful, blondie, or I might get ideas.”

“Only the bad kind, I hope?” Mischief twinkled in her eyes, and I loved it. I fucking loved how easy it was between us.

“Is it safe to return?” Noah, the fucking idiot, grinned at me.

“Yeah. You’re good.”

“I got some brownies. Mason said you can have these ones.” He slung them down on the table, and Harper reached for them, inspecting the bag.

“Thank you.”

“How’s team morale with my dad MIA?”

“Everyone feels a little restless. Coach isn’t giving us much information, and we’ve gotten used to practicing without him,” Noah said. “But we’ll still kick ass this weekend.”

“The University of Rochester Mavericks, right?”

“Yeah,” I said. “It’ll be a tough win.” They were good, one of the best teams in our conference.

“Nah, we’ve got this. Told you, Mase, we’re going all the way this season. I can feel it in my bones. And you’ll sign with Blue Jackets, and everything will work out.” He winked, and I wanted to throw something at his head.

“The Blue Jackets are interested?” Harper asked, and I shrugged.

“Your old man reached out. They said their scout would come down and take a look at me.”
