“Mason, that’s a big deal.”

“Yeah, but I’m not getting ahead of myself. I still don’t even know if I want it.”

“You want it,” Noah snorted. “We all want it, or we wouldn’t be here. It just depends on whether or not you want it enough.”

“Noah…” Rory leaned over and ran her hand over his shoulder.

“What? I’m just saying—”

“Yeah, yeah, Holden, we get it.” I blew out a frustrated breath. Because he was right. Of course, he was right.

My future wouldn’t just happen for me; I had to make choices. Hard choices. Ones I still wasn’t ready to make.

I thought I’d been ready, but then Harper had burrowed her way under my skin, and everything had changed again.

“You have time,” she whispered, pressing her lips to my cheek.

“Yeah.”

But right now, all I really wanted was time with her.

Wednesday night, I drove Harper to her shift at the RCC. She was nervous about seeing my brother now we were official. But I knew she had nothing to be worried about. I’d already talked to Scottie, and he had taken it all in stride. He was more excited that he ‘got to keep Harper’ than anything.

So I was hardly surprised when the two of them came bounding out of the center together, deep in conversation.

“Hey, buddy, how’d it go?” I asked, pushing off the side of my car to go meet them.

“We made junk art. I made a robot.”

“A very cool robot.” Harper smiled. “Next week, we’re going to paint the models and make a display.”

“Sounds fun.”

“It was okay.” He shrugged, making a beeline for the car.

“Everything okay?” I asked Harper, pulling her into my arms.

“Yeah. He’s been fine. What did you get up to?”

“Oh, you know. Sitting in the car, reading up on product management. Riveting stuff, blondie.”

“My good little student.” She pressed a kiss to my lips.

“I’ll gladly be your student. You can teach me all the things.” I went in to kiss her again, but my brother shouted, “Stop kissing your girlfriend. It’s gross.”

Harper buried her face in my chest, murmuring, “Busted.”

“He’s got to get used to it,” I said. “I can’t keep my hands off you.”

“The feeling is entirely mutual. Maybe we can stop on the ride home for a little late-night-make-out session.” She grinned.

“Deal.”

“Come on.” Harper grabbed my hand and tugged me toward the car.

I hadn’t told her, but part of me had been worried that Scottie might be upset about things once he realized I had to make room in my life for Harper too. He was so used to being the sole focus of my attention. Outside of hockey, at least.
