“Okay, baby. You be good, and I’ll talk to you soon. I love you, Mason.”

“Love you too, Mom.” I hung up and shoved my phone into my pocket.

“Everything good?” Noah asked, and I gave him a tight smile.

“Yeah.”

“Want to talk about it?”

“Nope.”

The corner of his mouth lifted. “You know, one of these days, I’m going to crack you wide open.”

“In your dreams, Holden. I’m a closed book.”

“Ain’t that the truth.” He grinned, grabbing Rory the second she filed out of the bar and pulled her in for a kiss.

With a little shake of my head, I slipped past them and joined the rookies—Leon and Ward—we’d brought along with us.

“Tell me again why we agreed to tag along?” Ward asked.

“Speak for yourself,” Leon said. “I’ll be glad for a change of scenery.”

“Running out of fresh pussy already, Banks?” I smirked, and Ward chuckled.

“More like avoiding a certain bunny boiler.”

“Let me guess, Madison Macintyre?”

“Bingo. She’s taken quite a shine to our guy here.” Ward could barely contain his laughter.

“Did you bang her?”

“No, I didn’t bang her.” He shook his head. “She has headache written all over her. She baked me protein cookies, for fuck’s sake.”

“Gotta get that protein.” Ward was cracking up now.

“You’re a fucking idiot.” Leon elbowed him in the ribs.

“What about you, Mase? We never see you with the bunnies.”

“It’s called discretion, assholes,” I tsked.

“Oh, it’s like that, huh?” Ward chuckled, and I ran a hand through my hair.

“Yeah,” I muttered. “It’s exactly like that.”

Like Millers, Zest wasn’t a usual Lakers hangout, but Rory and the girls liked the vibe here.

I had to admit; I didn’t mind it either.

Sure, there was something thrilling about walking into a bar where everyone knew your name, and where everyone wanted a piece of you. But it got old real quick, and after two years of Lakers’ life, it made a refreshing change to go to a bar and not be hit on from all directions.

“Shit, no one even cares,” Ward said as we walked toward the bar, and no one gave us a second glance.

Noah and I chuckled.
