“You might have to rely on more than just your skills on the ice if you want to find a hookup tonight,” Noah said.

“He’s shit out of luck then,” Leon grinned, “because we all know he’s got zero game off the ice.”

“Fuck you, asshole. I bet twenty dollars I can score with any chick in here.”

Noah let out a low whistle between his teeth. “Fighting words for a rookie.”

“You’re on,” Leon pulled a twenty out of his wallet and slapped it down on the bar. “But I get to pick the girl.”

“What’s going on?” Connor and Aiden put their girls down long enough to join us.

“Oh, nothing. Just Cutler thinking he’s got game.”

“I know I’ve got game, asshole.” He smirked, casting his hungry gaze around the bar.

“Bunch of horn dogs,” Connor muttered, leaning against the bar next to me. “Hey, about earlier, the stuff with Harper. I was only busting your balls.”

“It’s all good.”

“You sure? Because I—”

“Con,” I sighed, rubbing my jaw.

“Yeah?”

“It’s all good.”

“You know I just like to give you, Austin, and Noah shit. Although, I guess I can’t include Holden now he’s wifed up.”

“Hey, speak for yourself,” Noah glowered. “I’m not the one planning out my future and picking out the names of my kids.”

“Fuck off. I was drunk and told you that in confidence.”

“Connor Junior and Connie do have a nice ring—”

Connor lunged, clapping his big hand around Noah’s mouth.

“Fucking idiots,” I muttered to myself, wishing that I could be so easygoing. But I was always tense. Waiting for something to go wrong, worrying about Mom and Scottie, and what was happening back home while I was here.

Doing the college thing.

The hockey thing.

I knew she wanted me to pursue my dreams. To chase after the only thing I’d ever wanted. But I always felt pulled in two directions: one foot in the life back home and the other foot in Lakeshore.

Some days, it was an utter mindfuck.

Because going after hockey—dreams of going pro—meant turning my back on them.

On my brother.

He needed me. They both did.

So for as much as I loved it here, at LU, with my friends and the team, sometimes I couldn’t help but feel like it was the wrong decision.
