“What kinds of things are you interested in?”

“I don’t know.” I shrugged. “Something to do with kids, maybe.”

“Kids? You have more patience than me,” Rory chuckled.

“Well, if I want to be a teacher one day, it’s kind of par for the course.”

“You want to be a teacher?”

“You sound surprised.”

“No, I mean… maybe, a little. I just assumed you were heading for a career in journalism or copyediting or something adventurous like that.”

“I’m full of surprises.” I smiled, and this time it felt lighter.

But I couldn’t shake the surprise at seeing my father with Coach Tucker.

Maybe he was here for old time’s sake. Or maybe LU was hosting some kind of alumni event, and they’d invited my dad.

Not that I’d ever hear it from his mouth.

“The guys mentioned the Halloween party they always do at Lakers House.”

“Bite the Ice?” I asked.

“You’ve heard of it.”

“I have.” It was practically a campus legend. Every year the team turned Lakers House, the house on Greek Row where some of the team lived, into an epic scare house.

“It’s where Connor made his move on Ella last year, isn’t it?”

“Yeah.” Rory nodded.

“What are you and Noah going as?”

“How did you—”

“Seriously, babe. There’s no way in hell Noah is going to let you loose in a house full of drunken, horny hockey players and frat boys without making it clear as day that you belong to him. So come on, what costume ideas has he suggested so far?”

Her lips twisted in contemplation.

“Aurora…”

“Fine. But he’s got another think coming if he thinks I’m going as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Morticia Addams.”

“Oh my God, now that I would pay to see.” Laughter pealed out of me. “Morticia and Gomez, that is.”

“I don’t have the figure to pull off Morticia Addams, Harper. It’s a stupid idea.”

“Pfft. I always thought Morticia needed bigger boobs.” I winked, earning a smile from her. “What about Jack Skellington and Sally? Or Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. I can see you in a sexy little hooded red dress.”

“Hmm, maybe. I’d rather not dress up, though.”

“But it’s Halloween, and you guys will look so cute together,” I pouted.

“You’ll come, right?”

“Hell, yes. You know me, any excuse for a party.”
