And I didn’t want her to burrow under my skin any more than she already had.

“Are you close? You and your dad? Because I heard something else interesting.”

And there it was—her point.

Crap.

“I heard that you didn’t even know he’d applied for the job. Ouch.” Her eyes were crinkled with phony sympathy. “That’s got to hurt.”

You have no idea. But instead of letting the words out, I pasted on the brightest smile I could and said, “My personal life is none of your business.”

With that, I walked out of there wondering which was worse.

Living in the dorms and tolerating the likes of Natalie and her mean girlfriends.

Or living at home and trying to get my father toseeme.

It was impossible to decide at this point.

Because both made me feel like absolute crap.

The next day, I waited for Aurora to get our pre-class coffee, but she never showed. I rechecked my cell phone, but there was nothing.

If I didn’t make a move soon, I was going to be late. So I got my coffee to go and headed for the English Department.

When I rounded the corner, I ground to a halt at the sight of Aurora wrapped in Noah’s arms, the two of them lost in their own little world as students came and went around them. For a second, I contemplated retracing my steps to avoid any awkwardness, but Noah spotted me, waving.

“Hey,” I said, approaching them with a hesitant smile.

“Harper, I am so sorry. I overslept, and my phone battery died. I’ll make it up to you at lunch?”

“It’s fine; don’t sweat it.”

“You’re sure? I feel just awful.”

“Honestly,” I chuckled. Sharp and strangled. “It’s all good. But we should probably head inside if we want to avoid being singled out by MacMillan. I’ll just…” I thumbed toward the door and slipped around them. But I stopped last second and glanced back. “Good luck tomorrow.”

The Lakers had their first two away games.

“Thanks.” Noah gave me a small nod before ducking his head and whispering something to Aurora.

They were sickeningly cute. The way he towered over her, gazing down at her as if she was his entire world.

With a soft sigh, I slipped into class and took a seat, waiting for Aurora. She came in a minute later, cheeks flushed and eyes twinkling with desire. “Sorry.” She slipped into the seat next to me.

“It’s fine.”

“No, Harper, it’s not. I don’t want to be that girl. The girl who starts standing up her friends for her boyfriend. It was a mistake. It won’t happen again.”

“Relax, Rory. I get it.” I smiled, hoping it didn’t deceive me. “You’re in the honeymoon phase.”

“It’s not an excuse for being a shitty friend.”

“I know you would never be that girl.”

“You sure?” She gave me big puppy-dog eyes.
