“Yes, now stop worrying.”

“How did your session at the center go?”

“So… uh, you know I told you about the sweet kid named Sam.”

“Yeah…”

“Well, it turns out his name isn’t Sam. It’s Scottie.” Everything went tight inside me. “And he’s Mason Steele’s little brother.”

CHAPTER9

MASON

“How’s Scottie?”Noah asked me as we hit the free weights.

“You won’t believe it. Mom asked me to pick him up from his group, and guess who’s there volunteering… Harper.”

“Harper.” His brows pinched. “As in Rory’s Harper? As in Coach Dixon’s daughter, Harper?”

“Yep.”

“Holy fuck, this is the best thing I’ve heard all week.” I glowered at him, and he chuckled. “Why the hell is she volunteering in Rushton?”

“Beats me.” I shrugged, grabbing two barbells and starting some bicep curls.

“She wasn’t just volunteering with Scottie’s group,” I added. “She was working with him. Spent all afternoon helping him bake fucking cookies. The little shit didn’t shut up about her.”

“He’s got a crush… on Harper.” His eyes crinkled with amusement.

“Yep.”

Fuck my life.

“I talked to him the other day, and he told me all about the new girl he liked. Got talking about her titties—”

“He said that? Way to go, Scottie.”

“Seriously, Holden. He’s twelve. I do not need to hear my twelve-year-old little brother saying the word titties.”

Especially when he was talking about Harper’s tits.

“He’s going through puberty.” Noah switched arms and started a new set of reps. “It’s a confusing time. I’m sure you can remember being twelve.”

Of course, I fucking could. I’d spent most nights beating off to porn I found on the internet. But it was Scottie. He didn’t understand stuff like that was for private.

I let out a huff of frustration, remembering how good she’d been with him. How easily they’d talked. Scottie was weary of new people—choosy about who he let into his life. But he’d made an exception for the one girl I’d been dead set on keeping out ofmylife.

Talk about bad fucking luck.

“You know it’s some strange fucking karma that Harper just happens to be volunteering at the center your brother attends.”

“What are you saying?” I narrowed my eyes, not liking the insinuation in his voice or the hint of amusement there.

“I’m saying: maybe it’s a sign.”

“A sign?”

“Well, yeah. You and Scottie are a package deal. Whoever decides to take on your cranky ass also has to take on Scottie. Harper’s—”
