“It’s complicated.”

“It’s rarely straightforward. You’re a good hockey player, Mase. You wouldn’t be wearing a Lakers jersey if you weren’t. But good doesn’t earn you a call-up to the pros. You’ve got to be great. You’ve got to want it more than anything.”

“Anything?” I threw the question back at him.

“Oh, come on, asshole. Give me a break. I can have hockeyandthe girl.”

“Your heart might belong to Rory, but your ass belongs to Coach for at least another sixteen weeks.”

He flipped me off again, but it was accompanied by a deep rumble of laughter. Noah knew I was only half-serious. Being with Rory was his decision, and he was right. He could have hockey and the girl.

But one day, something might have to give.

* * *

“Rory, wait up,” I jogged up to Aurora, falling into step beside her.

“Hey,” she said a little warily.

“Don’t look so worried. I just wondered if you know where I might find Harper.”

“Harper?” Her expression turned downright suspicious, and I didn’t blame her.

Girls talked.

They talked a lot, and Harper and Rory were good friends. She’d probably spilled the details of our little altercation the other night and again at the center.

“Yeah, I need to talk to her.”

“About what?”

“Come on, Rory. It isn’t like that. She’s volunteering with my brother, and I need to clear something up.”

“She’s a good person, you know.”

“I’m sure she is.” I rubbed the back of my neck, feeling all kinds of awkward and wondering when life had gotten so fucking complicated.

“I’m supposed to be meeting her at Roast ‘n’ Go.”

“Great, I’ll walk with you.”

“Is everything okay… with your brother, I mean?” she asked.

“Yeah. Everything’s fine.”

“Okay.”

This was awkward as fuck. Even though I liked Rory, I hadn’t really gotten to know her beyond the surface-level stuff. It was just my MO. I found it difficult to nurture relationships when I was already pulled in so many different directions.

“How’s life with our star player treating you?”

“It’s good. Noah makes me very happy.”

“Yeah, he’s a good guy. And you’re good for him too, you know.”

Aurora peeked up at me and smiled. “Thank you. So you and Harper—”

“There is no me and Harper. I just want to talk to her.” Apologize and move on with life.
