She could volunteer at the center, and I could handle seeing her with Scottie on the odd occasion. It was a small price to pay to see him happy.

Besides, it wasn’t like anything had actually happened between us. Harper hadn’t actually gotten on her knees for me. It was nothing more than a fantasy. My brain’s fucked up way of telling me that despite everything that annoyed the fuck out of me about her, maybe I did find her attractive.

Okay, maybe I found her a whole lot more than just attractive, but it didn’t change anything.

“Sure, okay…”

“I mean it, Rory. Don’t go getting any ideas. I’m not looking to get involved with anyone.”

Especially someone like Harper Dixon.

“What is it with you athletes thinking that being in a relationship is such a curse?”

“I can’t speak for anyone else on the team, but I have too much on my shoulders to date.”

“With your brother?” she asked.

“He’s a part of it, yeah.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to get pushy.”

“You’re fine.” We reached the coffee shop, and Aurora hesitated.

“You go on ahead,” she said. “I’ll wait until you’re done.”

My brows pinched. She was turning this into something it wasn’t. But I needed to get it over with.

Pushing the door open, I scanned the shop and immediately found Harper sitting over in the corner. She sucked in a sharp breath at the sight of me, shifting uncomfortably on her worn-leather chair as I made my way toward her.

“What do you want?” she bit out.

“Can we talk?”

“If you came to tell me to switch groups, you can—”

“I didn’t.” I raked a hand through my hair. “Actually, I came to apologize.”

“Apologize?” She snorted. “I find it hard to believe that Mason Steele apologizes.”

“When he’s an ass, he does. My brother likes you.” I dropped into the seat opposite her.

“He’s a sweet kid.”

“He’ll be gutted if you aren’t at the group next week.”

“But you said—”

“I know what I said, but this isn’t about me. It’s about Scottie. I had no right telling you to switch groups.”

“You can say it.”

“What?”

She gave me a withering look. “You can’t say it, can you?”

Fuck, this girl.

“Look, I… I’m sorry, okay?”
