“That wasn’t so hard, was it?” Her lips twitched, and that unwanted image filled my head again. All that long blonde hair wrapped around my fist as I guided her head—her mouth—down on my aching cock.

Jesus. Harper Dixon was under my skin, and I didn’t like it.

I didn’t like it one bit.

“You know my little brother has a big crush on you.”

Fuck, why had I said that?

“He clearly has good taste.” Harper’s eyes grew wide as if she couldn’t believe she’d said that out loud. But she didn’t retract it or try to excuse it. She just held my stare waiting for me to say something, anything.

I didn’t, though.

At least nothing she wanted to hear.

“Okay then. I should probably go.”

“You don’t have to. You could stay and get a drink. We could—”

“No.”

“No?” She flinched at my harsh tone. “But I thought we could—”

“Look.” A weary sigh rolled through me. “This wasn’t me giving you the green light to try and do whatever it is you’re trying to do.”

“Drink coffee? I was suggesting we drink coffee and talk, Mason. It might help to know a little more about Scottie if I’m going to be working with him.” Defiance shone in her eyes, but I saw the hurt there—the dejection.

And maybe I was a dick for making her feel that way, but I didn’t come here to talk over coffee. I came here for Scottie. To appease my guilt and apologize.

That was it.

“Why do you dislike me so much?” she asked—brazen and bold.

Or plain stupid.

Because I wouldn’t back down, and I wouldn’t be forced into saying something I didn’t want to say.

“You really want to know?”

“I asked, didn’t I?”

“I know girls like you, Harper. Needy. Clingy. Willing to fuck their way through an entire team if it means they get a prize at the end of it.”

Her breath caught, anger and disbelief swirling in her eyes. “I can’t believe you just said that to me.”

“The truth hurts, blondie,” I sneered, pissed that she’d put me in this position.

“You know, I feel sorry for you, Mason.”

The fuck?

“To be so wary of everyone’s intentions. To be so… so cold.”

“I’m perfectly happy with my life, thanks very much. But do me a favor and stay out of my way.”

“Fine.”

“Fine.”
