A kind and loyal, and compassionate person.

But it wasn’t enough.

I was never enough.

Because you let yourself get too invested, Harper. You need to slow down, go with the flow… you need to rein it in.

Tears pricked my eyes as a life’s worth of pain and heartache swelled inside me.

I hated it.

Hated that after all this time, I still cared what my father thought about me. But it wasn’t just him. It was the impact his indifference—and downright rejection—had on me growing up and how it had shaped and molded me.

Broken me.

“Ugh, get a grip, Harper.”Mason wants you; he wantsyou. Maybe it’ll be different this time. Maybe he won’t—

“I’ve been looking for you.”

The rasp of his voice sent a violent shiver running down my spine. I turned slowly, my eyes clashing with Mason’s. He crooked a smile, and my heart exploded in my chest.

God, he was beautiful. All hard angles and sharp lines. His eyes were an arctic storm I wanted to get swept away in.

“Well, you found me.”

I don’t know why, but I stepped backward, letting the shadows envelop me. Mason came willingly, stalking toward me like a predator. When he finally reached me, my back hit the wall, a big tree concealing us from view. Not that many people were out here now. The party was winding down. People had paired off and gone home or moved onto a bar or club with their friends. It was mostly just the team and their inner circle left.

Mason stared down at me, but I felt his eyes everywhere, my skin vibrating at the intensity there. “I didn’t like watching you dance for Adams and Heller.”

“W-who?”

“It doesn’t matter because you’re not theirs tonight.” He reached out, snagging a stray curl between his fingers. “You’re mine.” His hand slipped to my jaw and buried his fingers in my hair, tilting my face up.

“Mas—”

He kissed me. Sliding his lips over mine and slipping his tongue into my mouth. He tasted good, like mint and the slightest hint of whiskey. I liked it.

I wanted more.

I wanted the rush of serotonin I knew would come. The burst of adrenaline.

Curling my fingers into his white tank, I pulled him closer, kissing him deeper. His free hand dropped to the curve of my ass, pressing me closer until I felt him at my stomach. Hard and ready.

Jesus. He was big and thick, and the wordsmonster dicksprang into my head. Dayna had said she’d heard rumors… but hearing it andfeelingit were two very different things.

A nervous laugh slipped out of me, and Mason pulled back, frowning.

“Sorry, I… it doesn’t matter.” His brow arched, and I sheepishly added, “I guess the rumors are true.”

“The rumors?”

“About your monster dick.”

“Jesus,” he breathed. “Maybe this is a bad idea.”

Panic slammed into me, and I grabbed his tank again. “No, I want this. I want you.”

“Meet me upstairs in ten minutes.” He slid his hand around the back of my neck, holding me there. “Last door on the left.”
