“What if someone notices me?”

“I’m sure you’ll think of something.” Mason gave me a rare smile before kissing me hard again, leaving me there breathless and flushed while he walked back into the house.

Oh. My. God.

My heart crashed so violently in my chest, I thought it might burst right out of my rib cage.Breathe, Harper. Just. Freaking. Breathe. This was happening—Mason and me.

One night only.

A frisson of excitement zipped up my spine, making me shiver. He’d kissed me with such need. Such possession and hunger. I touched a finger to my mouth, tracing the seam of my lips, replaying the kiss over in my mind.

I knew Aurora would warn me this was a bad idea. A really freaking bad idea. But I wasn’t the kind of girl who was going to get her fairy-tale happy ending. I wasn’t the girl guys took home to meet their parents. Hell, I’d never even made it to a third date before I got let down gently or ghosted or, worse, passed over for another girl.

I was the girl who got scraps—cookie crumbs of attention.

A bolt of anguish went through me, but I shoved it away.

I didn’t come to the party dressed as a sexy Ringmaster to wallow in self-pity. I came to have fun. To prove to myself that I could have fun and be content with being young and free and single.

Liar.

I ignored the little voice in my head, refusing to give her attention.

After a few minutes, I made my way into the house, searching for Rory. But I couldn’t find her.

“Dayna,” I said, tapping her on the shoulder. She was wrapped in Aiden’s arms, the two of them so freaking cute in their coordinatingGhostbustersoutfits.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Have you seen Rory?”

“Last I saw, she was heading upstairs with Noah. Ella’s got her hands full with Connor, I think.”

“I’ll try upstairs.”

“Take a right at the top of the stairs and head all the way to the end. The spare room is back there,” Aiden said.

“Thanks.” I smiled. “Enjoy the rest of the party.”

Making my way through the house, I reached the staircase and slipped upstairs, my heart racing in my chest. It was quiet. The music from downstairs drowned out whatever noises were coming from beyond the row of doors that greeted me.

I glanced down the hall, but there was no sign of Rory or Noah. While the coast was clear, I took a left and hurried down the hall.

God, I couldn’t believe I was doing this. But there was something exhilarating about it.

Something addictive.

When I reached the last door on the left, I didn’t get a chance to knock. It swung open, and Mason grabbed me, pulling me inside.

“W-wait,” I rushed out. His brows drew together. “I need to text Rory, or she’ll wonder where I am.”

Quickly, I dug my cell out of my purse and texted her.

Harper: Came to find you but there was no sign of you so I’m heading home.

Aurora: Sorry, Connor puked all over himself. Had to help Noah and Ella clean him up. You’re okay getting back?

Harper: I’ll be fine. Text tomorrow. xo
