“I get to see Harper again.”

Well, shit. Nothing like being axed for the girl you were balls deep inside last night.

Not that I couldevertell my kid brother that.

“Listen, how about I make you a deal. You have a good week at school. Show up and try your best, and I’ll see about bringing you to the rink to watch the team practice.”

“Seriously? I can come to Ellet Arena?”

“Sure, if I get the green light from Coach. But you’ve got to try and keep things together for Mom, okay?”

“Okay, I’ll try. But sometimes, I can’t help it, Mase.”

“Yeah, I know, kid. I know. Listen, I need to go, but I’ll talk to you soon, okay?”

“Yeah. Mason?”

“Yeah, bud?”

“I love you.”

“Love you, too, Scottie brother.”

He hung up, and I let out a steady breath. I didn’t want to bring up this thing with Dad to Mom; it was just another thing for her to worry about, but I couldn’t do nothing.

So I pulled up his number and sent him a text.

Mase: We need to talk.

I was almost surprised when his name flashed up thirty seconds later.

Dad: Free now if you want to call?

I hit call and waited.

“Mason, Son.”

“You’re a real piece of work. You know that, right?”

“What’s this all about?” He went straight on the defensive.

“One of Scottie’s friends saw you with your new lady friend and her kid. He had—”

“Shit, he knows.”

“Yeah, Dad. He knows. Had all these questions about whether you’d found a new family.”

“Mason, I didn’t mean for him to find out like this. It isn’t serious. Claire’s a friend. We hang out sometimes. It’s not—”

“I don’t give a fuck what you do with your personal life, but when I have to field questions from Scottie about whether the reason you left is because of your new family, it’s a problem.”

“I’ll fix it. I’ll talk to him. You know I would never intentionally hurt him.” Bitter laughter crawled up my throat, and he choked out, “M-Mason?”

But I wasn’t looking to play his games or pander to his guilt.

“I don’t give a fuck who the woman and kid are. All I care about is the boy you abandoned. Fix it.”

“I will. I’ll try and see him as soon as possible, okay? I didn’t—”
