“Build up to… yeah, I like that idea. Maybe I’ll see if he wants to hang out this week.”

“Is that code for fu—”

“No.” Janelle smacked Kalvin’s arm. “I mean, hang out. The non-sex variety. Dating in college is hard.”

“Pretty sure that’s what he said.” Kalvin grinned, and it was my turn to smother a laugh.

“Oh my God, stop!

“Hey, you three,” Chad bellowed. “I’m not paying you to stand around and gossip.”

“Someone’s pissy.”

“Someone’s having the dollar-sign withdrawals,” I said.

“Maybe you should text your hockey friends,” Kalvin suggested, and I glowered at him, flipping him off for good measure.

The less the team came around here, the better.

* * *

“Hey, question,” Kalvin said as we wiped down the counter.

The shift had dragged. Customers had dwindled off to a handful of couples. Chad sent Janelle home an hour ago before he closed the kitchen and followed not long after, leaving Kalvin and me to close up.

“Shoot.”

“What do you make of Janelle?”

“She seems nice enough. Why?”

“I think we had a moment.”

“A moment?” My brows crinkled. “Did you miss the part where she’s trying to turn her FB into her BAE?”

He stared at me like I’d grown a second head, and I murmured, “Fuck buddy into her BAE. Before anyone else.”

“Right. Yeah, I know. But it doesn’t exactly sound optimistic, and she’s so fucking hot. I think we could have some fun together.”

“You want to be her FB, too?” I asked a little incredulously.

“I’d date her. Take her out. Romance her.” His brows waggled, but it felt insincere. “I’m not that shallow, Dixie.”

“Good to know,” I chuckled, but it came out a little strained.

“What? Don’t give me those big disapproving eyes. It’s college. The majority of people don’t find their forever love at college. They fuck around.”

Okay, he had me there.

More than I liked.

“Are you really telling me you’ve been here for over two months, and you haven’t gotten freaky between the sheets with anyone?” He gave me a pointed look that made me flush all over.

“I…”

“Case in point, my friend. Case in point,” he chuckled. “It’s human nature. We all crave connection. That addictive high only sex can give you. So long as everyone has their cards on the table and consents, then it’s all good.”

How many times had I told myself exactly the same thing? And how many times had I still let the wires get mixed up?
