“Got it. I’m going to put my purse in the staff room and log onto the register. See you soon.”

Chad grumbled a hello as I passed the service hatch, and I gave him a small wave. It was better to avoid his wrath when the place was empty.

I went into the staff room and stored my purse in the staff locker, then grabbed an apron and double-tied it around my waist. Tips would be slow tonight, but I’d made enough the other weekend to last me a little while.

I was good with money; I had to be.

When I went back out front, I found Kalvin and Janelle chatting at the bar.

“Hey.” Kalvin’s eyes lit up. “I was hoping you’d be on tonight.”

“You were?”

He nodded. “Jill is great, but she’s so…”

“Hey, I love Jill,” I said.

“Janelle here was just telling me all her problems.”

“Kal,” she hissed.

“What? We’re all one big happy family here, right, Dixie?”

“Something like that. What’s up?” I asked her.

“So, I’m seeing this guy…”

“Scandalous.” I smirked, and Kal smothered a laugh.

“Ha, ha. We’re not really seeing each other as such, but we’re—”

“They’re fuck buddies.” Kal smirked.

“Right. Gotcha.” My mind flashed to Mason, but I shoved those thoughts out of my head. We weren’t fuck buddies. We weren’t even buddies at this point. “Exclusive fuck buddies or—”

“I’m not seeing other people. I barely have time to see him. But I like him. A lot. And I think he likes me.”

“So tell him.” I shrugged. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

“You make it sound so simple.”

“It is that simple. I’ve never understood the whole play it cool thing. Leaves a lot of room for misunderstanding and a chance for your feelings to get hurt.”

“But if he doesn’t feel the same…”

“At least you’ll know. Will it suck? Sure, for a little while. But wouldn’t you rather know now than a few weeks or months down the line?”

“Huh. I didn’t think of it like that.”

“I can’t believe I’m saying this,” Kalvin added. “But Harper has a point. Direct and to the point might work.”

“I don’t know.” She gnawed the end of her thumb, blushing. “We’ve got a good thing going. I don’t want to ruin it. But I also kinda want more, you know?”

Didn’t we all.

“Maybe build up to it then,” I said because she looked all kinds of sad, and I got it.

God, did I get it.
