“Checking up on you.” I smile at Tatiana.

“He always does that, no matter who I’m with,” she says. “It’s one of the many reasons I love him.”

“Speaking of love.” We both turn back to Tanya, who is still playing nervously with her nails. “I want to ask your opinion on something. Actually, I think my mind is set, but I still trust what you both have to say.”

“Um… okay,” I reply, confused.

“What is it, Tanya?”

“I want to become a vampire.”

Holy mother of God.

Did she just say that? No, she couldn’t have.

Why?

“Both of your faces are scaring me. Why are you looking at me like that? My partner is one, and he will outlive me. I will continue to age while he stays the same. I don’t want that. I want forever with him,” she whines.

“What does Melvon say about this?” I ask her.

Tatiana turns to me, shock written on her face. She does not approve in the slightest of this idea. But I have a feeling it’s no longer an idea and just a matter of time before it becomes a reality.

“Who cares what Melvon says? This can’t happen. You can’t become a vampire. If you do, you will lose your natural abilities.”

“Let’s be honest… my powers are nothing compared to either of yours. I’ve always been the lesser sister. The one they kidnap, the one no one sees as a threat. Melvon sees me as so much more than any of that. He is the first person to ever do so, and I want to spend eternity with him.”

“You aren’t a nobody. We see you,” I insist.

“Yes, you see me,” she agrees fondly. "But no one else ever has. No one has said, ‘Hey, those sisters are a real hoot, especially that middle one.’” Tanya rolls her eyes.

“I think it’s stupid. Why would you want to be reliant on someone else’s blood? Do you want Melvon to drink from someone else? I know you enjoy him drinking from you,” Tatiana says, crossing her arms over her chest.

“I do.”

“So you want to watch as he drinks from someone else?” Tatiana bites back at her.

Tanya tears at her nails as she lowers her head. “I didn’t think of it like that.”

“No, you didn’t. But I did. You will have a great life together. Why must you think about ending it in that manner.”

“You just hate vampires,” Tanya gripes.

“I like Melvon,” Tatiana replies.

“No, you don’t. If you could pick anyone else for me, you would.”

“You’re right, I would. But that isn’t my choice. It’s yours. But this is crazy, even for you.”

“For me?” Tanya sits up straighter at Tatiana’s words. “What’s that meant to mean?” Tanya asks her.

“It means you are stupid for even thinking about it.”

“I am not. You are stupid for letting our sister save your baby and then being mad at her for it!” she screams. I sink farther into the bed. “Worry about your own life and not mine.” Tanya stands to leave, but I call her name. She pauses with her hand on the doorknob.

“Maybe just wait for a while,” I suggest. “There’s no harm in waiting. What does Melvon say about it?”

“He doesn’t want me to do it,” she says into the door. “But I want it. Doesn’t that count for anything?”
