“Yes, of course, but I think he may be right. For now, at least,” I say gently.

“I wanted both of your support on this,” she whispers, her back still to us. “It’s sad that I don’t get it.”

“You wanted us to blindly accept the fact that you want to be a vampire?” Tatiana says. “No, we will not do that. We love you and don’t want that for you.” Tanya doesn’t say another word as she opens the door and walks out.

Tatiana glares at me. “I don’t know what’s going on with you, but you need to get out of this bed as well.” She gets up and stalks to the door. “And I expect you to tell me what you are hiding. I know it’s something.” She closes the door as she walks out.

And with that, I sink into the bed as a blood-curdling scream rips through the house.

ChapterTwenty-Six

Ileap from the bed and run out of the house to see the york has someone on the other side of the barrier. How did they get them?

John is standing there, his fists closed at his sides, as he watches it all play out in front of us. The york grabs the person by the throat—it seems to smile in whatever form it’s taken—and leans in. It appears to be kissing the person, but it’s not. It is sucking the life right out of them.

John turns to face me when I reach him, my sisters already by his side.

“Do you know how to stop it?” he asks.

“I don’t.”

Neither did Max. But I guess someone has to try. It can’t remain here.

“You don’t look so sure. We can’t let it stay here and consume people one by one. We have to try something.”

“Max found a way to keep them out of the village in the other world,” I say. “I’m guessing it was a barrier like this.” I point to the one that’s currently up.

“It still managed to get one of yours.” When I look back, the york drops the witch to the ground in an unmoving heap. No soul in their body left, which means… no person left.

“I can ask Lucifer,” I offer, and everyone goes silent.

“That may be a good idea. He’s old enough where he might understand what this is.”

“Maybe you should try Valefar instead,” Tatiana suggests.

“You think he’s more trustworthy than Lucifer?”

“Lucifer is the King of Hell, and he never bothered to see you until recently. And he’s what? Simply willing to help you now. Seems a little odd.” She shrugs her shoulders. “That’s all I’m saying.”

“I don’t trust either of them, but Lucifer is more forthcoming than Valefar,” I tell her.

I think of Lucifer. But before I go, I offer a smile, and then I’m transported to a place I haven’t seen before.

“Oh my God.” I cover my eyes and scream as I turn away. On the bed in the middle of the room is Lucifer and a thing. Is that a woman? It has scales—red bumpy scales—all over, and Lucifer is fucking it. Oh my God, I can’t believe I just saw that.

“This is an unexpected visit today,” Lucifer croons. “Drogan, you can leave. It seems my daughter needs me so desperately that she forgot to knock.” I spin around to see him with pants on now. Thank God.

“I didn’t know. I just… I thought of you and ended up here,” I explain.

Drogan gets up from the bed, not a care in the world that she is naked. Her breasts are hard and scaly, and she has no hair on her body. She gives me a sour look, and I place my hands on my hips.

“Drogan, you wouldn’t be giving my daughter attitude, would you?” Lucifer asks and turns back to face her. She smiles at him and rolls her eyes before she leaves the room without a backward glance.

“I didn’t know,” I say again.

“I can tell. Now, what is so urgent for you to be here?” He goes over to a dresser, and I take in the room. It’s all black with a red bed and a red drawer set. Plain and boring but a statement, nonetheless.

“Is this your room?” I ask.
