Logan had dated Zoe for seven years before marrying her. Hell, before falling in love with her. Was it because they were younger when they met? Or was she never the woman for him, and it was their shared history and familiarity that bonded them together?

Logan had thought he’d loved Zoe. Hell, he still did. As furious as that made him.

Hate and love were such close emotions.

She’d taken so much from him, and he wasn’t sure he could ever forgive her for that.

One moment, he was a man in love, happily married with a baby on the way. The next thing, he was separated, angry and no longer a father-to-be.

Now here he was, sitting beside Emma’s hospital bed after knowing her for just a week, when he should be back in Philly, networking his board to ensure he remained the CEO. Of the fucking businesshe’dbuilt.

Was he insane?

Daniel had told him he was.

Hearing Emma say she would leave when he was opening up his life and heart to another woman was terrifying. But he’d already nearly lost her.

Something in him wanted to pursue this.

“I want more than dinner, sweetheart.” Logan smiled, pushing away the tightness in his chest.

“I think we did that already,” Emma teased and then flinched.

“Let me get the nurse. You’re in pain.” Logan went to stand, but she reached out to him. He halted, half sitting.

“Promise me,” Emma said, and his chest deflated.

He knew what she was asking, and it was the one thing he couldn’t do. If he did, he’d lose everything.

Logan sat back down.

“What you overheard me saying to Daniel was horrible,” he admitted. “However—and hear me out—I can’t have our relationship out in the public.”

“Get out,” Emma snapped.

“Emma, wait,” he growled.

“No, get out.”

Fuck.

Logan hated that he was hurting her again. But if he was connected to her as a kinky romance author, Doug would twist this, and his chances of retaining his role were very fucking slim.

“Emma, please, goddamn it. Listen to me, please,” he pleaded. “There’s a potential coup happening to out me from my company.”

She glared at him.

“One of the members will use anything he can to discredit me. It’s not about whatIthink; it’s about perception,” Logan said. “That is what I was saying to Daniel. Come on, you’re an intelligent woman. you know how this world works.”

Logan watched Emma defrost. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.

“How can my career have anything to do with your capacity to do your job?” she asked, frowning. “Daniel has no issue with Harper.”

Logan sighed.

“That is a longer story and one you deserve to know if we’re going to start seeing each other.”

Logan would tell her about Zoe and the baby, but not today. She was tired and needed to heal.
